SOMEWHERE IN THE WORLD: Footballer Dies After Injuring Spine During Backward Somersault Goal Celebration

Football1

An Indian footballer tragically met his end after an attempt at celebrating a goal went horribly wrong.

Peter Biaksangzuala was a midfielder for Bethlehem Vengthlan FC in India, and scored the equaliser for his team during a match against Chanmari West Fc.

The Indian Express reports the 23 year old attempted a series of backward somersaults, but unfortunately fell backwards on his head and injured his spine in the process.

His teammates, who were getting ready to jump on him in celebration, realised something was wrong and called for help. He was stretchered off the field and taken to Aizawl Civic Hospital. Attempts to repair the damage to the spine yielded no results and he passed away eventually.

Despite the equaliser that led to the tragic event leaving the game at 1-1, his side went on to lose 3-2.

Celebration such as the backward somersaults are not common, but African footballers in the past have made it a sort of a specialty. Nigerian Julius Agahowa thrilled the world with his seemingly endless string of somersaults whenever he scored.

Portuguese winger Nani was banned from the same celebration by Sir Alex Ferguson because he did not want his prized winger getting an injury through it. Portsmouth’s former Congolese striker Lomana LuaLua has also injured himself using the same celebration.

Tragic news indeed: in the wake of this news do you think some special legislation is needed to block footballers from similar celebrations in the future?
