Yesterday Was Sanitation Day: Typical Superficial Ghanaian Solution to A Problem With Deeper Roots

Ghana
Ghana

I must have missed the memo: yesterday was national sanitation day and all citizens were supposed to help in locally organised communal labour to help clear the massive sanitation problem we have in this country.

The president himself made the announcement, and is reported to have participated in the activities himself in the Volta region. Aside November 1, every first Saturday of every month is to continue this pattern of being a day for communal clean-ups in the country.

I am not against the idea in principle; communal participation is one of the biggest ways to get a town clean and to maintain that sanitation problem- however the problem here is that as usual we are jumping straight to the middle of the problem, without bothering to tackle the root cause of the issue.

This initiative, no matter how laudable, is just a stop gap to mask the bigger issue of a country totally without a sanitation plan and would fail massively without uprooting the bigger issue.

Why is the country and Accra in particular, so dirty? Is it that Ghanaians are just dirty people, or that the structures are not in place to deal with the issue? How much cleaning can be done on every fourth or fifth Saturday that can stem the tide of immense filth engulfing this nation?

Omo Ghana Responds to Yahoo Travel Writer-Lee Abbamonte’s Opinion that Nigeria is the Worst Country to Visit in the World

Nigeria
Nigeria

Dear Yahoo Travel Writer-Lee Abbamonte,

How are you doing today? I hope wherever you are, you are enjoying some fresh air and cool breeze with a picturesque scene of a crystal clear waterbody as this seems to tickle your fancy.

I recently read an article that stated your opinion about Nigeria and I must say I was madly disappointed. Not because of your comment but because of the lack of reasoning that backed that opinion. It is surprisingly unbelievable that you found not even one thing to like about the country thus making your opinion even less acceptable. You have pushed me to believe that you allowed the few (and I stress on few) negative experiences you had to cloud your overall judgement of the country. I would be glad if you could feed me with validated points that would in turn convince me to accept your opinion of Nigeria.

You see, I grew up in a world that mostly rejects people of my skin colour and caliber but fortunately Nigeria still accepts me and calls me her own. So she can’t be such a bad place, what do you think?

Due to her union with other West African countries, I can travel to other neighbouring countries without seeking permission and paying exorbitant fees as would be the case if I was to come to yours. So even when I have to pay an illegal stipend to my hungry brothers and sisters at the borders, I do this understanding their hustle. Why? Because your people and some of mine delved in the slave trade which I feel is still ongoing in its own complex way and has left many of such people being mistreated. Don’t be quick to say you wouldn’t do same were you in their situation. Thinking of it, in their minds, you might actually be the corrupt one, grudgingly refusing to succumb to their own systems. Lol.

Watching the movie Double Cross at the Greenwich Odeon Cinema in London on Friday, my first thought was, they seem to have given away all the goodies in the trailer so what else could possibly interest me….or so I thought.

I’m going to start with the pleasantries because of course pointing out the trash or the critical points is a simple task where reviews are concerned.

Following the screening of the movie when the audience learnt that Double Cross was D.R. Kuffour’s first movie we erupted into applause.

In true African style, the film-makers did drag out a lot of the scenes that could have easily have been shortened. The movie had all the factors that keep an African crowd satisfied and engaged including a very pleasing sound track, I couldn’t quite keep still in my seat at some points.

There were a few gasps, laughs and shouts from the crowd during the screening…I won’t do you the disservice of giving away any plots or twits but certainly, you most definitely will not have a clue what unfolds in this romantic action comedy. Emphasis on the romance…I was entirely convinced by some of the intense attraction that developed between some of the characters. A member in the audience even asked during the Q&A if this was INDEED acting. It was that convincing.
