Meet Makose: The Musician & Flutist Showcasing African Culture through Music

Makosa
Makose

Makose ( real name Eric Mensah) is recognized as one of the very few creative upcoming artistes who define indigenous African music to its core.

Makose combines the art of playing musical instruments with his song writing ability to make his brand complete. As an emerging artiste, he takes inspiration from Nigerian instrumentalist and musician, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, determined to help combat European cultural imperialism and promote Ghanaian/African culture through his songs.

If one has not listened to Makose’s songs before, his choice of outfits alone will draw attention to nothing but one – a promoter of Ghanaian/African products. It’s therefore not too surprising that he is doing music that focuses on upholding African culture – something many youths of his age wouldn’t consider doing.

His name Makose, which means mistake in Swahili, is a well-chosen name for what he truly stands for. According to him, he chose Makose (mistake) because he thinks Ghanaians/Africans have made a huge mistake by embracing the white man’s culture and neglecting what belongs to them (Ghanaians/Africans).

Makose, who is currently working on his upcoming debut album (scheduled to be launched in March 2015), has put out one video already titled ‘Fine Fine Woman.’ In the video, he talks about a young African woman who sleeps around with different men and its outcome, employing an African setting to depict the story.

Some of the songs on his forthcoming album include ‘Tears of Africa’, ‘My Woman’, ‘Ankwanoma’, and ‘Im Ready.

Few days ago, GhanaCelebrities.Com caught up with Makosa for a chit-chat. In the interview, he talked about his unending struggles in a bid to get his songs heard. Interestingly, he disclosed that he would have been a baker if he wasn’t doing music.

Currently, Makose is signed on to SM Mensah Entertainment. For bookings, you can contact his manager on 0244238500.

PHOTOS + My Thoughts on ‘Afua’s Diary’: A Good Attempt at Telling a Relevant Story But…

Afua's Diary London Premiere
Afua’s Diary London Premiere

I sat among a crowd, mostly of African origin at the Odeon Cinema at Greenwich in London last night to watch for the first time “Afua’s Diary” and despite having read the synopsis several times which sort of gives a sharp idea of the storyline—I was particularly interested in how the film-makers were going to tackle the ‘African immigrant’ story.

Most African film-makers with strong Diaspora ties seem to have an entrenched interest in showcasing the struggles, problems and the uncertainties that hover above the heads of African migrants who find themselves in Europe and United States; mostly those without the right to stay—and it was out of this same interest came the film “Anchor Baby”.

Having watched several “African Illegal Immigrant” themed movies, I was looking forward to what Bibi Owusu Shadbolt (the scriptwriter) could make out of the conventional theme—perhaps, well over exploited by Diaspora based African film-makers.

Even though the elements, details and flow of the storyline failed to depart from ‘the on the street conversation’ about this issue, the film-makers perfectly laced the storyline with subtle comedy, championed by Kwaku Sintim Minsa (KSM) all the way from Ghana—serving as the strongest element of the film, depicting a departure from the usual .

Of course anyone who has lived abroad could predict the conversation, the happenings and could break the not so sturdy suspense with ease, but there was no way that person could predict the comedy—or resist its energy to induce laugher.

The Storyline

For some people, every story has been told but to me, it’s not just about the story—it’s the little roses you adorn the story with and for this, ‘Afua’s Diary’ had that layer of comedy to add a fresh touch to a story which has been told many times but with different lenses.

Has Chris-Vincent Not Seen a CHANGE in Christabel Ekeh’s Complexion? | Bleaching Alert

Christabel Ekeh
Christabel Ekeh today

Hello Chris-Vincent,

Though you are one of the most brutal and say it as it is writers I have ever come across on the web, you leave some of us a little upset with your bias which you do not hide.

I respect you for saying you are biased because to be frank, every human being is biased but I believe when it comes to fighting a well meaningful cause like campaigning against skin bleaching, we ought to leave behind whatever favouritism we hold and hit the nail on the head, all the time.

I am a big fan of Yvonne Nelson and yet on this platform as well as many, I have refused to defend her skin bleaching. I condemn her for that aspect of her life or just refuse to comment because I find it shameful that she is doing that, being her fan.

For many years, you have nailed it on the head for Yvonne Nelson making sure everyone knows she bleaches and my grandmother even knows about this including her cocobutter story. You have really reached a lot of people with your anti-skin bleaching campaign as far as Yvonne Nelson is concerned.

I therefore write to bring your attention to a new person worth looking at, someone who may be your friend but as I mentioned earlier, a good cause must be devoid of bias so let’s say it as it is.

SHADOWS FROM THE PAST: Kwaw Kese Has Learnt His Past Lessons Shamefully in Prison

Kwaw Kese
Kwaw Kese

Yes, Kwaw Kese must be learning serious lessons from his past deeds now that he is in prison and those past experiences are banging him hard in the face.

Within a spate of 2 years, Kwaw Kese has NEEDLESSLY stepped on the toes of his own colleagues in the music industry – unfortunately, he felt no remorse then or apologized to any of those characters (at least as far as the public is concerned).

Kwaw Kese once said in an interview on Hitz FM’s Cruise Control that the ‘Dancehall King’ hit singer Shatta Wale is known to him but insisted they have nothing specifically in common. He posited:

“Shatta Wale is a buddy, not a friend.” He said they do not communicate and he doesn’t even have Shatta Wale’s phone number; “I do not even have his contact” he stated. Kwaw did not end at that.

Shatta Wale went on a three-state tour of the United States with performance scheduled at Maryland on the 25th July, 26th Chicago and New York on 9th August. Kwaw tweeted – making allusions to the fact that whenever some GH artistes visit the US, they act as tourists and that tweet generated some needless controversy because Shatta Wale was the notable GH artiste who was then in the US and taking pictures and sharing with his fans on social media.

Kwaw Tweeted:

“Some of these gh artists come to the us and act as tourists. Lol. Then after some minutes, followed it up with: Many GH artists are in the state but some fools think I’m referring to their champion, Ekutia biaa nim newura ampa!!!

Of course Shatta Wale and Bull Dog replied Kwaw too. It’s a well known fact that Kwaw Kese is in the camp of Da Hammer of the Last Two but a response by Da Hammer to Kwaw Kese’s tweet suggested that he was not really happy or enthused by his ”son’s” tweet.
