‘Kpa Kpa Kpa’ Man Believes He’s Owed Royalties For The Use Of His Slogan By Some Companies For Their Ads

Real name Mohammed Akwabei, this gentleman shot to fame when a video of his interview with a Joy News Reporter showed him displaying some impressive lyrical dexterity.

A statement he made during that interview, ‘Kpa Kpa Kpa’, quickly went viral and has even been described as a movement.

Of course, big companies in the country would always want to capitalise on such a current and catchy phrase; and Globacom, LG, and Surfline have all designed ads capitalising on the popularity of the ‘Kpa Kpa Kpa’ saying. Guru also made a hit track based on it.

As he stated in the viral video, Mohammed is an unemployed father of five, and he feels these companies should pay his something for using the phrase he coined. He has been on several local media platforms crying his eyes out, claiming he’s owed compensation for the use of the slogan

He told myjoyonline others are benefiting off his hard work, whilst he continues to slave in penury.

“A lot of people are using “kpakpakpa” for their adverts, nobody has given me any penny”

“The originator of the “Kpakpakpa” is sitting down with my mother sick and I can’t take care of her. Why should this happen in Ghana?”

He also questioned why he was not picked for the role in the Glo ‘Kpa Kpa Kpa’ advert, but it rather fell to Van Vicker. He stated elsewhere Guru’s manager has compensated him with a hamper and Ghc 160, but that despite a promise for further meetings he has not heard anything since.

The ‘Kpa Kpa Kpa’ trademark has been registered, but it’s unclear who holds the rights to it. Without any legal claim to it, I wonder what he might get from this call of his. But I also feel as the obvious originator of the term there at least should be something owed him.

Maybe Chris-Vincent can educate the rest of us on the laws of the issue. But in the interim, do you think anything is owed the ‘Kpa Kpa Kpa’ guy?
