If you saw the scenes in Malabo yesterday you’ll be feeling several strong feelings at this time. Anger, Shame, Disgust; these are all legitimate reactions to seeing people react so badly to losing at a sport.

The conduct of the fans was terrible, and the hope was that CAF would come down hard on the host nation. As it turns out they barely did anything; this punishment amounting to not more than giving a degenerate child a fond tap on the head.

For an incident that left people in danger of their lives, and some got injured and are in hospital at this time; a much more severe punishment should have been administered.

As it turns out, after deliberation by the disciplinary committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF); they have resolved to fine Equatorial Guinea to the tune of $100,000.

In addition, they are to bear the medical expenses of every Ghanaian fan who got injured during the disturbances in the stadium yesterday.

Reports from Malabo indicates around 30 Ghanaian fans who sustained varying degees of injuries from the incidents in the stadium.

The cherry on the cake, showing CAF’s really lenient stance on the whole issue is the one game ban for Equatorial Guinea, in which they would have to play in an empty stadium. However, that is a suspended sentence; meaning they would be allowed to play their next game under normal conditions, and the ban would only apply if further crowd trouble occurs in that game.

CAF claims it’s in the ‘spirit of fair play’, but I just see an attempt to placate the nation that saved them when no one was interested in hosting their tournament.

That next game, is the third place play-off against DR Congo on Saturday. One can only hope there is no further incident. For the Stars’, they would be busy prepping for the grand finale against Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday.
