Penalty Shootout Loss Leaves Black Stars Devastated As Ivory Coast Hoist Second African Cup

Ghana AFCON final
Ghana AFCON finals

After a nerve wracking 120 minutes, penalty shootouts was needed to break the deadlock in the AFCON finals; and as is quite customary for Ghana, they lost to Cote d’Ivoire the honour of lifting the 2015 African Cup of Nations.

The very definition of déjà vu, the 9-8 loss mirrored in more ways than one, that from 1992 when Ghana lost on penalties to Ivory Coast in another Nations Cup final.

An uneventful 120 minutes of regulation time produced little chances, as both sides were at their cautious best. The game itself took a while to settle down, as nerves and an overly defensive approach stifled the creative football both sides have shown on their trek to the final.

Cote d’Ivoire started the stronger of the two, but Ghana grew into the game as the half wore on. Midway through the half, Atsu almost handed Ghana the lead; but his shot from the edge of the box struck the upright with Boubacar Barry beaten.

Dede went closer a few minutes later, finding himself in the box after Rahman’s pinpoint pass. His shot also struck the bar, the angle too tight for him to get the shot on target.

WATCH LIVE: Ghana Vrs Ivory Coast | African Cup of Nations FINAL + Updates

Asamoah Gyan-Captain of Black Star
Asamoah Gyan-Captain of Black Stars

Ghana’s Black Stars may be able to break the spell and win the Africa Cup of Nations today by beating Ivory Coast—in  a match which will kick off in few hours (19:00GMT).

Both teams have had eerily similar campaigns. They both breezed through qualifying, but then had the slowest of starts to the competition. Both topped their groups, and then went on to win both the quarter and semi finals by scoring three goals in each game.

Aside the similarity in their progress in this tournament, the biggest backdrop to this clash of giants is the history behind this clash. Amidst the plethora of matches the two teams have contested in, none looms larger than the 1992 African Cup Final in Senegal.

That contest in Dakar ended with Cote d’Ivoire lifting the trophy after penalties, their first and only AFCON win to date. That Black Stars team was led by- excluding the final where he was unable to play due to suspension- Ghana’s soccer maestro Abedi Ayew Pele.

It was a painful defeat, especially as Ghana had a very star studded team who was everyone’s favourites. A little over twenty years later, a chance has popped up for Ghana to avenge that defeat.

The Black Stars have been steadily improving over the course of the tournament, and since that first round loss have scarcely looked back. They are genuinely improving game by game, each performance somehow supplanting the sublime one that came before.

Can the Black Stars win the heart of Ghanaians back by winning tonight’s match? Join us here on GhanaCelebrities.Com for the live broadcast, updates and commentary of the grand finale in Malabo.

MUST READ: So Where Does Jesus’ Story Stand in The Pantheon Of Past Religious Leaders? | History Shows We Are Blindly Following Nothing But A Collection Of Past Stories…

Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ

Christianity is easily the most dominant religion in the world, comfortably outnumbering Islam in its number of global adherents. Due to the nature of religion, which demands taking things on faith, most Christians would attest to the irrefutability of the tenets making up the religion.

The Bible, the holy book, is gospel. Everything in it is fact, and nothing one might say can change that to a Christian. This is despite the fact that as a work of literature, the bible’s authenticity cannot be proven. This is also despite the fact that it is a collection of books, which were carefully handpicked to make up the document, whilst others were carefully left out.

To the Christian thus, the bible is the word of God and undeniable. To the interested outsider, it is a work of literature whose authenticity is at best doubtful.

The story of Christ, told by four different authors in the books collectively dubbed the ‘gospel’, tells the story of perhaps history’s most famous figure. Christ is the founder of the modern religion, his whole life a series of remarkable events that point to his destiny as the child of God, and the saviour of the world.

What all Christians would see as the unique and divine occurrences in the Christ story, are actually a collection of tropes from the collection of religious literature predating his birth. Every story, no matter how remarkable, follows the basic tropes of storytelling. Every writer borrows from the literature that predates him, and either follows tropes, or breaks them entirely.

Every story has a hero and a villain; there are the stories with the princess in need who would be rescued by the gallant prince. Most heroes have a sidekick; there are some elements that run across every story ever written; that is what a trope is.

So when you discover, that no single element in the Christ story is as unique as you’d been led to believe, and that they are mostly recurring tropes in the religious leader origin story, you see Christ might not be so special.

Thousands of years before Christ was born man had religion, and our explanations for the origins of these mysterious beings have often followed one trajectory; Christ’s is no different- which means he is either as true or as fraudulent as the founders of several religions that came before him.

This article goes into more detail, but mine would just skip the surface of similarities in the Christ story and that of other religious leaders predating his birth. The obvious conclusion here is; Jesus Christ might not be all that we believe he is.

Common elements include the virgin birth, death and resurrection after three days, temptation by the devil, and divine warnings to save the infant saviour from an enemy attempting to avert prophecy.

For instance, six of these deities were born via virgins, a few others on December 25 itself. A couple others also died and resurrected after three days.

These are all common in the story of religious leaders, and the fact that Christ’s isn’t any significantly different show the framers tapped into history, and just followed the tropes of the genre.

These are the similarities between Christ, founder of Christianity; and other religious leaders predating his birth.

After an eventful three weeks in Equatorial Guinea that has featured both sides of the African game, the tournament is set to draw to an end today with the grand finale in Malabo- kick off at 1900 GMT.

Amidst all the great goals, poor officiating, bumpy pitches, and crowd trouble; two teams have proven to be head and shoulders above everyone else. It’s those two, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire; who would go head-to-head for the African crown in tomorrow’s game.

Both teams have had eerily similar campaigns. They both breezed through qualifying, but then had the slowest of starts to the competition. Both topped their groups, and then went on to win both the quarter and semi finals by scoring three goals in each game.

Students Of St Paul’s Senior High School Wanted To Lynch Colleagues Caught in Homosexual Act | This Led To Clashes With Police That Led To The Death Of One Student

OMG
OMG

So this is the upbringing our society has given our youth; a firm belief in instant justice for those practicing ‘unnatural acts?’

Sadly this is not an isolated belief, as I have spoken with several people on this issue who would probably do worse to anyone they felt has this particular sexual orientation.

Students of St Paul’s Senior High School in Denu in the Volta Region, were engaged in riots on Friday night that led to the death of one student, as police had to be called in to handle the situation.

Citifmonline reports the students were irate over the protection being given by school authorities to two guys who had been caught ‘doing it’. They felt they should be allowed to administer instant justice to the two, for the crime of daring to do it to a man- and not finding a lady like any decent senior high school student would.

The feeling was that school authorities took no action to those believed to be practising it in the past, so it was time to take the law into their own hands.
