Adwoa N.B Writes: Sanitation in Ghana | We’ve Lost It…

My previous article discussed a major problem facing the Ghanain society, which is the manifestation of Christian based Churches, by people who victimize members and make it the center for financial gain. Just as much of a concern is Sanitation. There seems to be this this continuous challenge and I believe it starts first with the people.

In Ghana, I attended an outing where I had offered hand sanitizer to the entourage I was with because of money-handling. It came across as an insult to some. As if I was saying that they were dirty or something when that was not the intention. I quickly learned my lesson and decided that going forward I was going to keep my mouth shut. Left it alone, because if I didn’t, I would be noted as a know it all. I have witnessed food handlers use the same hand to take money and then fetch you food from that hand. That’s a big NO NO. Money alone carries germs and bacteria since it is carried from hand to hand and unfortunately maybe handled by people who do not usually wash their hands.

Just a few additional points to illustrate…..

Car Emission Smoke

I thought some cars had to be road-worthy in Ghana. It’s amazing, some of the cars you see on the road that are producing so much smoke that you cannot even breathe. Because of inhalation, is this not dangerous for our health? What is being done about it? Some countries around the world, will not allow you to use your vehicle on the road unless the vehicle passes an emission test. Fail and your car stays parked at your house…

Gutters

Also an eyesoar that the gutters in Ghana can become so choked. Full of garbage and when it rains all the bacteria from the gutter gets carried out into the remaining environment causing illnesses such as cholera. It should not even be a surprise that such a disease is still prevalent in our society.

E-waste

Why has Ghana become a dumping ground of no longer needed electronics? Not only has it taken up large amount of land, but the children that go into these areas become exposed to dangerous toxins. Abogbologshie in Accra, has become a dumping ground, where children ransack through wreckage in search of copper and other gadgets that they can sell on the market. It’s amazing that this somehow still goes on.

Maybe just maybe, we should have laws in place where if one is caught littering they would face a heavy fine. Emission protocols need to be in place, gutters need to be cleaned regularly and stiffer laws should be implemented to prevent people from other countries to bring their junk into the country.

How do we enforce the basics?

I am just saying.. .it’s getting out of hand.

  1. My dear great article…we have laws in GH…believe me we have with big english the queen even can’t pronounce…it’s just our mentality….what pissed me off the most is people throwing pure water satchets out of their car, van or bus….as for the electrical there are regulations that GH won’t take in used goods anymore especially refrigerators for instance…people do business by shipping such goods from abroad to home…but then again I saw a documentary years back that the west pays out to the government in countries in Africa and dump all these unwanted goods…I don’t know if it’s the same now…but what the GH government could also do is recycling…I don’t know if the government has plans for that… Sika diee basaa….as for the know it all you are afraid to be called, hw3 get use to it…you will be called that regardless…so voice up and be free
