68th Cannes Film Festival’s Poster Unveiled | Pays Tribute to Ingrid Bergman

Cannes Poster 2015
Cannes Poster 2015

The 68th Festival de Cannes (13-24 May 2015) has chosen to pay tribute to Ingrid Bergman with this year’s poster, following on from Marcello Mastroianni in 2014.

Hollywood star Ingrid Bergman was a modern icon, an emancipated woman, an intrepid actress, and a figurehead for the new realism. She changed roles and adoptive countries as the mood took her, but never lost sight of her quintessential grace and simplicity.

This year’s poster captures the actress, who worked with Alfred Hitchcock, Roberto Rossellini and Ingmar Bergman, and starred opposite Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart and Gregory Peck, in all her beauty, her face lit up by a calm serenity that seems to herald a promising future.

Liberty, audacity, modernity – values also shared by the Festival, year after year, through the artists and films it showcases. Ingrid Bergman, who was President of the Jury in 1973, encouraged this journey…

“My family and I are deeply moved that the Festival de Cannes has chosen to feature our magnificent mother on the official poster to mark the centenary of her birth,” said Isabella Rossellini. “Her outstanding career covered so many countries, from the smallest European independent films to the greatest Hollywood productions. Mum adored working as an actress: for her acting was not a profession but vocation. As she put it, ‘I didn’t choose acting, acting chose me.’ ”

Ghanaian Man Lynched For Sleeping With Another Man’s Wife

WTF
WTF

Seems to me as Ghanaians we have a very shallow understanding of the law- if we didn’t we wouldn’t have this disturbing proclivity towards mob justice that undermines all our protestations of religious morality.

Surely these townspeople do not understand what constitutes and does not constitute a crime. Like my perverted friend DB often says, sleeping with another man’s wife is not a crime. And even if it were, it’s not the responsibility of citizens to mete out justice. You cannot lynch armed robbers, rapists, or murderers; much less an adulterer.

Adomonline reports a 32 year old carpenter known as Paa Willie has been lynched for sleeping with another man’s wife at Adansi Anhwiaso in the Ashanti Region.

DID YOU KNOW THAT: A Power Nap Of Just 45 Minutes Can Boost The Memory Five-Fold?

Power Nap
Power Nap

According to researchers, a power nap of just 45 minutes can boost memory by five times. This has immense benefit particularly for students as a short doze helps to retain information you have learned and ‘significantly’ improves recall.

Of course it’s difficult to wake up after such a short nap when you are really tired—and that is why most people avoid it but considering the benefits, its worth the struggle.

Scientists from Saarland University in Germany who conducted the research say; during sleep, bursts of brain activity known as sleep spindles play an important role in consolidating newly learned information.

Professor Axel Mecklinger said a nap of just 45 minutes to an hour ‘produces a five-fold improvement in information retrieval from memory’

‘The memory performance of the participants who had a power nap was just as good as it was before sleeping, that is, immediately after completing the learning phase.

PHOTOS FROM the London Premiere of Lydia Forson’s ‘A Letter From Adam’ + My Take On the Movie…

Lydia Forson
Lydia Forson

Actress/producer-Lydia Forson premiered her movie-A Letter From Adam on Friday at the Greenwich Odeon Cinema in London—and the crowd was pretty impressive. Of course, it could have been far better but considering the fact that this is her first, I wouldn’t want to use attendance to measure the success.

Despite trying so hard to beat the conventional late start by turning up for the premiere at 10pm instead of the 9:30 advertised start time, I still had to wait around till almost 11:15pm before the showing started.

Clearly, the cinema hall was booked for 11pm and as usual, I heard several people complaining about the long wait—I presume these were people who got to the venue at the advertised time.

The Story Line

A Letter From Adam’ may not necessary have over the top stars but the storyline which comes in layers of romance and comedy is definitely worth whatever time one may spend to watch it.

It tells a story of a young woman who falls deeply in love with a far older man—and this time, not for material gains but for ‘genuine affection’. Having had rough-good times in the past with series of strangers, this young woman battles to keep her head up for her new found love as the distractions and ‘habit’ from her past continue to creep in…

Of course everyone has something hunting him or her in life, including the old man (Adam)—but Adam is pretty steadfast despite the needless hunt. With the hovering past distractions in her life, the young woman easily falls for Adam’s hunter’s cunning presentation—perhaps, it’s better calling it a ‘misrepresentation’.

The filmmaker says ‘A Letter from Adam‘ is “a contemporary story about love, loss and hope which draws audiences into a realistic cycle of life seen through the pain of loss, the journey of self discovery and the courage and strength to find hope in the face of adversity.”

To me, it’s a good attempt at looking at one of the many shades love comes in—highlighting the fact that the love story doesn’t always end with smiles, something the film-makers themselves struggled to  accept and therefore had to push the ending for that conventional ‘a happy ending’.

A Romantic Comedy…

A Letter from Adam’ is a romantic comedy but I feel the romance and comedy were unconnected though they stayed within the same film. The comedy was majorly between Lydia Forson and Naa Ashorkor’s character—and occasionally, between Lydia Forson and her many in-bed associates.

There was little or no comedy between Lydia Forson’s character and Adam—where the romance primarily existed. A little bit of comedy could have been pushed into Naa Ashorkor’s character and her husband’s marriage which would have well complemented their not so obvious romance.

The comedy got people laughing and the occasional local language ‘interjection’ even made it more fun…It was a big plus!

Acting…

The strength of the movie lies in the acting; Lydia Forson was amazing and Wale Ojo was splendid. When it comes to delivery, you can’t fault Lydia Forson who placed so well with Nigeria’s Wale Ojo.

Wale Ojo comes up as an aging Denzel Washington, calm and excellent—with that perfect posture and smile for on-screen delivery.

Vin Diesel Names His New Daughter Pauline In Honour Of Paul Walker

Vin Disel
Vin Disel

Vin Diesel have been pretty broken up since Paul Walker died, as aside the two of them being the leads of the immensely popular ‘Fast and Furious’ movie series, they were also great buddies.

Walker died in a car accident in November 2013, whilst the latest instalment, ‘Furious 7’ was being filmed. At just 40 years it was a pretty tragic end; and the whole world has been mourning the loss since.

Two Students of KNUST Perish in an Accident While Returning From Church Service | Others in Critical Condition…

KNUST Accident
KNUST Accident

Across the globe, Sunday is often the preferred day when many Christians go to church to worship and praise their God for his guidance and protection. They as well seek for more protection from him in order to do his will.

This was not the case this time around when two students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), who were returning from church yesterday afternoon, lost their lives in an accident, Daily Graphic reports. The incident happened when the church bus they were using hit a tree after veering off the road.

According to the newspaper, the bus was descending a valley on the KNUST campus between the Katanga and the Brunei halls when it skidded off the road and hit the tree.

British Muslim Kills Himself Because His Family Refused TO Acknowledge His Sexuality: Why Do Religious People Never Learn?

Nazim Mahmood and Matthew Ogston
Nazim Mahmood and Matthew Ogston

Often we fail to look past the surface when dealing with a complex issue. In Ghana we often outright reject the views of others that do not tally with ours.

It’s a vicious spiral of silence that keeps ‘different’ people in their shells. If we find out that someone is gay, or does not believe in God- there is sometimes a violent reaction. But more than that, there is often a more silent reaction, no less visceral but that’s more subtle, more psychological.

It grinds the victim down to the point they feel worthless. Often if the violence doesn’t get you the psychological abuse would.

In the West, violence is not really a problem for gays anymore. But in parts, the psychological side still persists. This often happens when it comes into conflict with religion; the one thing that makes people so short sighted they refuse to acknowledge anything else.

This sad story posted on the Guardian talks about a gay couple, one of whom was Muslim and was so torn he had to lead a double life to keep his family off his trail. When they eventually found out, their reaction was ballistic, as he had anticipated.

When the Devil Came to Steal: The Dollar Evangelical Jet

Firework of dollars
Dollar

When Creflo Dollar (his surname does say a lot about him though) via his website appealed for funds to buy a $65m jet to “…continue reaching a lost and dying world for the Lord Jesus Christ….” And oh how I was so pleased when he received the bashing of his life that he had to quickly cancel (or put it on hold) his get campaign; that to me is a very good step in the direct direction. This man is not going to travel to the end of the world preaching the gospel. The furthest he may go is Europe to connive with his associates on how to own the next car!

From his appeal, what he was actually telling us was:

“A man of God like me and my wife should never suffer any discomfort while doing the mighty and gracious work of God. We are too special to spend time waiting in the airport and in queues like other normal people. As God has promised us, we will never be the tail but always be the head and that is why we’re rightly called a man/woman of God. If you have a problem, go and question God….” (The book according to Creflo Dollar chapter $65m jet vs. critics/media).
