It’s the series of the moment; HBO Game of Thrones returned from hiatus last week, and people had missed it so much they couldn’t wait to watch it- leading to the leak of the first four episodes.

Now having a course in honour of pop culture icons is nothing new- Rihanna and Beyonce were the subjects of courses offered by the University of Texas last year. Now, it’s the turn of Game of Thrones, with Northern Illinois University offering a course in the Westerosi drama.

According to Hollywood Gossip, the new course is named ‘Game of Thrones, Television and Medieval History’. The rationale being that the television series and its source books ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’- accurately reflect what happened in our own history during the middle ages.

“It represents aspects of the Middle Ages much more realistically than other media depictions that purport to be more accurate,”

It stands out because it comments on the human condition in a way that seems real to people. It’s a really good example of a piece of modern culture that draws on how the past impacts the present.”

Those were the words of Professor Valerie Garver, brain behind the concept. If you’ve watched any part of Thrones, you’ll know that’s true.
