Cleanliness is Next to Godliness in Europe But It Surely is Not Worth Anything in Ghana

Street Cleaning in Spain
Street Cleaning in Spain

For over 100 years now, European countries like the United Kingdom have NOT seen cholera—and yet, it killed hundreds of Ghanaians a few months ago. This is a disease caused by dirt, a clear indication that we live in dirty environments in Ghana—especially our capital.

I have visited several European countries and perhaps apart from Sweden, Spain’s streets are on top of the cleanliness chart. And the above photo I took this morning explains why. Each morning since I have been here, they come to wash the pavements and streets—and I am told, this is the way things are done here.

In Ghana, our gutters don’t even get cleaned regularly or at all. The citizens themselves care less about how clean or dirty their environment is and the government can’t be bothered either. Some people live like pigs in certain parts of the capital with no regrets or shame.

Surely, a country does not need to be rich to make Cleanliness a priority, after all, we say it’s next to Godliness. Economically, Spain is in a mess compared to the European standard, yet, it continues to make cleanliness a priority.

We can save millions of lives from the hands of cholera and malaria in Ghana by simply making cleanliness a priority. Do we need the white man to come and fix this for us too?

Perhaps, YES, because we can’t seem to even understand it!

If you live anywhere in the world, share with us how clean or dirty the environment is… 🙂

  1. And I absolutely agree with you. This is why Ghana will remain stuck in the position that it’s been in for the past 58 years.
