The Red Carpet Question ‘Who Are You Wearing’ in Ghana | Maybe We Don’t Need It…

Apart from the fact that our celebrities are knock-off versions of those in Hollywood and other well established industries around the world, majority of our  Ghanaians events continue to ‘steal’ everything Hollywood—including questions which are relevant out there but irrelevant in Ghana.

On the red carpet in the West, celebrities are given the opportunity to mention the names of the various designers they may be wearing—and these is done against the background that most of the outfits these celebrities wear are sponsored/given to them freely by designers or are truly expensive brands.

The question; what or who are you wearing has therefore become a must expect red carpet question—be it at a movie premiere or an award show in the West. It’s relevant out there, after all, which fashion designer would not want to give Lupita Nyong’o a free dress to wear so she can proudly mention her name at the Oscars?

It’s therefore a case of scratch my back for me and I will kindly do the same for you.

However, when it comes to Ghana where we blindly steal everything we see on television without considering its relevance, we continue to hear the ‘who are you wearing’ question being thrown on all our red carpets.

Mostly, our knock-off celebrities are compelled to lie—with some mentioning expensive brands they cannot even afford.  This brings to mind the Nadia Buari’s issue—where she claimed to have worn an Oscar De La Renta dress on a red carpet when in fact, it was a knock-off.

Even if our celebrities are indeed wearing top brands, there are a lot of indeginous designers breaking the market and fashion world, as long as the outfit is slamming shouldn’t that be all that matters? Take for instance Joselyn Dumas’s Dress by PISTIS at the AMVCA 2015. PISTIS is not a famous name but the dress was out of this world, she was by far one of the best dressed at the event by all standards and she did not have to wear a Zuhair Murad or a Givenchy.

Even if our celebrities are shopping online portals like EbayGhana or Kaymu all that matters is the finishing look , they can easily buy dresses from some of the high street brands and still make up for brand names (if it is so imperative) as well the right dress for the event. They can mention the name of these outlets where they bought whatever they are wearing from.

That way, the outlets get a relevant publicity out the discount granted—the celebrity gets to rock quality outfits cheaply and the question; what are you wearing becomes relevant on our red carpets.

We can steal or borrow Hollywood concepts but at least, let’s tailor them to suit us—and let’s give the benefits to our local people who we can do real business with.
