IN PHOTOS: All-Round Filthy Gutters in the Capital | Why Accra Still Records the Highest Cases of Cholera in Ghana in this 21st Century

Accra, Capital of Ghana

Seriously, Accra is more than qualified to be ranked among the many African cities that truly understand dirtiness – and I mean real dirtiness. If you’ve had the opportunity to live in Ghana’s finest capital city before, this assertion will not sound eccentric to you.

From the homes of many Ghanaians living in Accra to the streets, one thing that you’re sure to come across is filth, most of it being sachet water rubbers. It is not surprising that Accra still records the highest cases of cholera in Ghana in this 21st century.

Mind you, the Mayor of Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuye was recently adjudged Africa’s Best Mayor for developing the capital city. Development indeed! And a billboard was even mounted in Accra to welcome our Mayor back after a trip to receive his award in Angola. Dumping of garbage in gutters without any restriction is a norm in Ghana and as such, people gladly adhere to this rule – from the law enforcer to the layman on the street.

GhanaCelebrities.Com decided to visit some areas in the capital and check out how clean Ghanaians keep their gutters. Our ratings, on a scale of 0 – 100, might give the impression that we are mean to Ghanaians so we will allow you to do the ratings after glancing through the photos.

LIFESTYLE GUIDE: ‘Out & Taste’ in East Legon-Accra | That Perfect Take Away Joint You Should Note Down

Out & Taste in Accra
Out & Taste in Accra

Being a foodie/foodienne/glutton/munch-all-you-like, the eyes in my belly always seem to notice new eateries around town, no matter if my stomach is already groaning from excess. So imagine my excitement when I whizzed past a new take-away on the way to the office!??!  It was like utopia.

“Oooh, I must go there!” I thought, hoping not to forget where I’d seen the sign.  So when the opportunity presented itself a couple of days ago I knew exactly where I’d like to fill my belly!

“Out & Taste” in East Legon’s American House is a little take away offering a selection of Ghanaian food served on time and presented well.  I was later to learn that this week old venture was the business owner’s second branch; the first being located in Haatso.

It is evident that a lot of thought has gone into the branding for “Out & Taste”; the black, white and red colour scheme is present throughout the restaurant, staff uniform and the takeaway packaging. The logo is simple, original and effective – there is no doubt that this is a place to eat. Overall the branding creates the sense of consistency which is unfortunately a concept that has not been embraced by many business owners in Ghana.  I remain impressed.

NDC MP Says Only the Poor Complain About Dumsor | That Effects of Dumsor Are ‘ Exaggerated By People Who Cannot Afford To Buy Fridges Or Air Conditions In Their Homes’

Ebenezer Teye Larbi
Ebenezer Teye Larbi

We start with…SMDH!

First of all, what does the NDC MP of Lower Manya Krobo, Ebenezer Teye Larbi mean by saying; Ghanaians should rather invest their “energies into thinking” outside the box than lamenting over the impact of the power crisis?

And again, if someone cannot afford basic household electrical gadgets such as air conditions and fridges, has the person not gotten a bulb in his or her house to at least feel the effect of Dumsor? What about the children who have no light to study or even to iron their clothes? At least for basic iron, the poor can afford and as such they still feel ‘Dumsor’ right?

Anyway, why are these people poor in the first place? Because of how your government and people like you are running the country—and have failed to empower these people to step out of poverty.

Some of our leaders are just……

Via Adomfm;

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Lower Manya Krobo, Ebenezer Teye Larbi says he is surprised at the exaggeration given to the effects of Ghana’s energy crisis.

His shock, he said, stems from the fact that it is persons who cannot afford basic household electrical gadgets such as air conditions and fridges who are rather exaggerating the effects of the crisis.

The effects of Dumsor are “exaggerated by people who cannot afford to buy fridges or air conditions in their homes,” he said.

The NDC Legislator who was reacting to cries on the government to end the crisis on Asempa FM’s Ekosii FM programme further called on Ghanaians to rather invest their “energies into thinking” outside the box than lamenting over the impact of the power crisis.

Ghana Broascasting Corporation
Ghana Broascasting Corporation

It’s not just privately owned broadcasting networks like Joy FM which recently announced a cut in its transmission hours because of Dumsor that are heavily suffering under the current power crisis in Ghana—even the state owned GBC is doing the same.

GBC officials say they cannot afford to transmit for 24 hours again and as such, each day they will cut their transmission at 12 midnight and resume after 4am, all because of dumsor. This means GTV and its subsidiaries will now end transmission at 12:00am and resume at 4:00am.

The Director General of GBC Major (Rtd) Albert B. Don-Chebe confirmed this to Joy FM but denied reports that staff will be laid off as being speculated.
