In an extraordinary turn just days after winning elections, FIFA boss Sepp Blatter has announced he’s going to resign his position.

The Swiss announced at a press conference that he’s stepping down so reform can be carried out at FIFA. He announced that elections would be called to choose his successor.

“I have thoroughly thought about my presidency and the 40 years FIFA has played in my life. I love FIFA more than anything else and I only want to do the best. I decided to stand again for election for the good of football.

“My mandate does not appear to be supported by everybody. This is why I will call an extraordinary meeting.

I will organise extraordinary congress for a replacement for me as president. I will not stand. I am now free from the constraints of an election. I will be in a position to focus on profound reforms. For many years we have called for reforms. But these are not sufficient.”

Blatter, and FIFA as a whole, has been under intense scrutiny since a bunch of its top officers were arrested on corruption and racketeering charges going back decades. Everyone wondered how Blatter managed to escape incrimination, and he went ahead to win elections just a day or two later.

It seems now that the pressure has gotten to him, and he has agreed to step down. The question now is if he’ll still be free, or he would eventually get incriminated in the scandal, which after all involves most of his biggest collaborators.

The extraordinary congress, during which the next elections would take place, would occur anywhere between December this year and March next year.
