We Ghanaians Are ‘Selfish Ignorant B*stards’ | Where Do We Want the Ebola Vaccine Trial to Take Place? + See What Leila Djansi Wrote

Greed
Greed

Ghanaians are worried that the Ebola Vaccine trial is positioned to take place in the Volta Region in Ghana—and as usual, we are exposing our ignorance.

So we don’t want Ebola Vaccine trials in Ghana…huh?

Great, but the next time you have a malaria or some sickness and you go to the drug store to buy a drug, try to also find out where the pill/drug you are buying had its trial done.

We use several drugs which were tested in other countries—we are beneficiaries and yet we don’t want a drug/vaccine tested in our country?

All the vaccines we have in this world today including those against Polio, Tetanus and others were tried on human beings somewhere in some country—and in some community.

Today, we proudly use these vaccines as Ghanaians, yet we can’t open our mind enough to have trials in our country?

Selfish ignorant b*stards…

Any question? I will gladly answer you.

And don’t ask that why can’t they have the trial in those country that had Ebola—because that question just shows how lame you are.

You don’t mostly try vaccines in areas which had a disease and had been cured—because, the bodies out there may have developed antibodies to fight the disease so you wouldn’t know if it’s the vaccine working or it’s just the anti-bodies in action. (Plus they are already having a lot of trials there).

‘Let’s use our head small…’

We have just published an interesting article on this courtesy of James Atta Aglah, read it for the education you need.

I guess we should take the vaccine trial to Togo…huh? Those there are less human beings than us..right?

Leila Djansi
Leila Djansi

Someone just sent me the above screenshot of a facebook message by film-maker, Leila Djansi in relation to this issue—exhibiting extensive ignorance clothed in tribalism.

Can people like Leila Djansi tell us where the vaccine should be tried?

Also, how has Africa become the dumping ground of the West in relation to this particular case? We suffered and were killed by Ebola in thousands—today, a vaccine is being developed to fight against this disease and we are the same people rising against it?

How many people from the West died from Ebola? SMH!

update

For the ‘ignorant souls’ who refuse to learn but continue to say vaccines are not tested in the West—this is a list of countries where different Ebola vaccines are being tested.

The United States has tested Ebola vaccines and they seem to even have one already. If Ebola strikes today, they will have vaccines for it and their people will not die like flies.

What do we have as Ghanaians or Africans? We are just making noise; that is why we die like chickens.

Now, let me hear those who will come and talk about vaccine testing in Ghana as a bad move. This is why we always die so easily; we are never prepared for disasters…

Ebola1update

Below is an article we published earlier today the issue…

The EBOLA VACCINE TRIAL in Ghana | The Deep Ignorance of Ghanaians + My Take

Clearly a lot of Ghanaians have no idea of what this whole vaccine trial is about. But that is beside the point, what has really saddened me is how well educated folks who could simply research on it to be informed have refused to do so and yet are busily making public comments on it.

Today, i have tuned in to two big radio stations and on both stations, I was simply EMBARRASSED by radio panel members seriously shouting with passion but sadly too, with a LOT OF IGNORANCE on this whole Ebola vaccine trial.

So I have decided to answer three questions most people ask ignorantly – i don’t mean for you to be offended, just be informed.

1.What is this whole vaccine thing? Are they really introducing Ebola into Ghanaians?

A vaccine is a weakened form of a virus that is introduced into an individual so that the body develops immunity (let’s call this “body soldiers/ ability to fight”) against such disease. Yes, the vaccine contains the virus content. However this is weakened and the amount is too small to cause the disease – this is ensured by passing the vaccine through several tests and using animal subject over and over again.

2. Ghana has no Ebola, why not Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea who have had the virus?

People who have already been exposed to the virus (naturally as in the case of people in these countries) may already be producing such antibodies in their systems and so the researcher cannot tell if those antibodies is due to the natural exposure to the disease or by the vaccine they are testing. That is why it wouldn’t be prudent to try vaccines in places already exposed to the disease in this case, Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

3. Why Ghana, Volta region, Hohoe?

This is the most unreasonable among the questions. FDA has stated over and over again that the Principal Researcher (the person who is doing this research) is in the University of Allied Sciences in Hohoe.

Additionally, the University have the needed facilities and equipment for such trials which makes it a suitable site for such trials, as was done for Polio, Onchocerciasis, etc.

I’ve noticed that people who have asked this first out of ignorance have received these answers but simply refused to accept, therefore permit me to ask you too the following,

a) Why not Ghana, Volta, Hohoe, etc.

b) If it was done at Kintampo Health Research in the Brong Ahafo Region or anywhere else in Ghana, would these questions be any different?

c) If it was any other project, as in the case of siting the University (UHAS) in Hohoe, would these same people question the motive for choosing their town?

4.If the test was ok why are they bribing the people with GHc 200.00 and mobile phones?
Again, FDA has denied that the amount is a bribe. In fact I believe if it were, it would possibly have been over the GHc10,000.00 range. Not all volunteers may have mobile phones – fact, and since they won’t be confined the researcher needs to have a means to communicate with them, check up on their health and manage the outcome of this trial and thus the mobile phones.

Personally, this seem a good enough reason though I don’t know why people keep re-questioning this motive, but to think GHc200.00 and a mobile phone – perhaps a yam is enough to bribe people into a “suicidal mission” is simply ridiculous.

Let me conclude by perhaps putting out the following – these are facts

Vaccine trials have been done over and over again with humans all over the world and with equally dangerous diseases – that is why we have OPV against polio today, Tetanus, Measles vaccine, Yellow fever vaccine etc. Ghana is benefiting from such trials and if such people had refused we wouldn’t be where we are today.

To those who say ‘ibe malaria self a ibe ok’ don’t worry, some families here in Ghana have already agreed for their children to be used for such tests (and perhaps is still ongoing), so when such drugs/vaccines are out and you gladly give to your child know that someone was used first.

I hope this helps clear the cloud on this issue but if you still have your passionate feeling I urge you to google ‘vaccine trial’ and educate yourself some more. Meanwhile if you are a radio panellist, PLEASE, tomorrow, don’t sit on my favourite channel and display your ignorance again because you guys make me change my radio dial out of embarrassment—making me loose the rest of my favourite morning show.

  1. As for this I one di3 I disagree.
Ghana did not have any ebola cases.
it would make a lot more sense to test it in a country that had to deal with it.

  3. Something is not sinking in right! People get immunization shots, say for polio, and still get polio afterwards, thus failure is also possible. So no matter how little of the virus is introduced into the system, 100% success is not guaranteed. From what the experts claim, symptoms mature with 21 days after which the patient can die within 2 to 3 days. Within this period, what happens to people that these test species come into contact with? Is Ghana being blackmailed in any way to accept this trail at this time? Obviously, majority of us are ignorant in this field as you comfortably describe, if that is the case, should the so called experts focus their attention on helping to inform? Se how majority of our people conduct themselves, if not neat enough to curb cholera, why test us with ebola? Why are all the so-called informed minority spending their energy into looking for guinea pigs? If it is so rewarding, why don’t those few “informed” Ghanaian s volunteer? Why don’t they, their families etc just use themselves as the sacrificial lamps?

    • I am pretty lost with your comment—the vaccine is a trial, so we all understand it’s not 100% safe, but the question is; if we say they can’t do it in Ghana? Where should they do it?

We use several drugs and vaccines daily as Ghanaians, do we care about where these were tested, such that we are enjoying them today?

Even in London, there are always drug test—I regularly hear commercials on radio, calling for what you call ‘guinea pigs’.

We can have concerns, but it shouldn’t be founded on ignorance and tribalism.

One concern I personally have is; how much information did the volunteers receive? This can be addressed but to totally stand up and say, No ebola vaccine should be tried in Ghana is ‘selfish greedy bastard’ position.

I am sure when you check your left arm, you have the vaccine spot still there—that vaccine you comfortably received as a child was tested in someone’s country and community.

      • I bear the added name Setor. But I have said on this platform before (if I remember correctly), that I am not an Ewe; so please cross out the tribal part.
I see the mark on my arm as you referred to, but I also got measles along my growing up. So? Clearly, majority of Ghanaians are not comfortable….call is ignorant. Whichever country has it’s country mostly comfortable should be used. Now we are being coerced into acceptance, or we are called, ignorant, selfish, greedy etc….This is passive aggression, don’t you think?

        Reply
        • The tribal part was not for you; I was referring to Leila’s comment which obviously seems like, she will have NO problem if it was taking place in Kumasi—so sorry if you saw it so.

Aggressive? You don’t go after our sort of deep root ignorance with a glass of ice water. No…

          Reply
        • Debby you didn’t get Measles because you got the measles shot, you got the measles most probably because you were exposed to the measles virus at a point when your immunity was down. In fact the measles vaccine is not permanent as was earlier suggested so if you have checked, a second dose of measles has been introduced in Ghana.

          Reply
      • Yeah and people volunteer to it. This seems like they will be forcing it on poor uninformed people. Like I said, be a leader, get ur as.s in ghana and get tested

        Reply
    • Debby, persons getting shots of vaccines and still coming down with the disease mostly means the vaccine could not produce immunity and not because the vaccine causes the disease. In cases where a person has a reduced immunity as a result of disease conditions (immuno-compressing diseases) then yes, a live vaccine could cause the disease however, for every such vaccine, there are exclusion factors and such groups of people who fall within these categories are excluded from the vaccination.

  8. Honestly this is by far the most too knowing and arrogant piece i have ever read on this blog. i admired your objectiveness on issues affecting Ghana, and have enjoyed following ur write ups until this very moment. I guess ur absence in the country is making u feel more of a westerner than a ghanaian and its beating ur logic of reasoning atleast as potrayed on this article. if not so, then u are an attention seeking dude who has nothing to share anymore. Yes, i agree totally that such vaccine should be tried out in Africa, but strictly in those countries that got affected by ebola or still trying to be ebola free. They will benefit from it more than the ebola free Ghana. Secondly, a trial means it isnt 100% a solution, so why dont they rather risk it in those countries where that risk have already been defiled by the numreous ebola cases?
It will be less a risk trying the vacine out in LIBERIA,or Guinea instead of in Ghana. C’mon @ChrisVincent21:disqus

Ah aba. And you actually said I am arrogant? Perhaps, it’s better than being unable to even read a simple article to make sense out of it.

Read again and you will find out why they can’t do the testing there.

  10. Where in Europe are you because drug testing happens everyday in Europe. Just yesterday, I saw several adverts calling for volunteers in London. So spare me your ignorance. You don’t even know what you are talking about.

Not only drugs, even planes get tested in Europe and America with pilots who are human beings on board. A recent example is the test flight of Richard Brandson’s Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo rocket plane—which killed one pilot when it crashed during the test.

You take drugs when you are sick, who do you think they tested those drugs on or who should they test new drugs on? I guess on Angels right?

James all of your exose’ should have started way before now…as Chris mentioned earlier. James would you say that, ZEMA (if I got the name correctly), can work on an American but not a Ghnaian? Must Ghana run this trial if we wish to have access? Why can’t we focus on cleaning out filt from Ghana, educating the masses etc, leave out Ebola and its trial to those countries that do not have 3rd world problems? Why didn’t members of the EPA just volunteer for this trial or your good self and your mum, girlfriend/wife (stop laughing)? If it’s so beneficial? Why ask ordinary ignorant citizens to volunteer? After all, the financial benefits maybe great, Gh researchers would get to learn etc…. Why don’t these researchers just take the shots on behalf of Gh?

    • maka do you really think ulcer or cancer just came up? The fact that we don’t find some diseases among poor people doesn’t mean they don’t actually get such disease. It rather and sadly mean that such people die before they even know they have these diseases and since no autopsies are done in the village they don’t get to know what killed them.
If i child were born with hole in heart or any severe genetic disease in the village, it simply dies after few minutes or hours and is buried. Such a child may have survived in Korlebu or any other advanced facility. So if you don’t find adolescents or people in the villages with such diseases don’t say those diseases do not exist there.. wai!.

Are there no human beings where they manufactured this medicine? why can’t they try it over there? what deters them from trying over there? This is not Ignorance on the part of Ghanaians but rather we are being careful and vigilant, we know these white people and their capabilities whenever they come to Africa. Its a No for us, try it in Europe.

    • Chris take it easy, we all learning.. You said they have no place for quarantine thats why they giving out mobile phones to enable them communicate with the people, right? How can you conduct such an exercise and dont have a place for quarantine, meaning these guys are not ready. And i will ask again, why a sophisticated gadget like a mobile phone? Is it to lure or entice people to take part? couldnt they have rented a place or built a place in a form of a well structured canopy for the exercise? Why do you give money if indeed you are very positive about the exercise? This makes the whole thing suspicious and confusing to the ordinary ghanaian. I think some proper education is the best medium cos this is a “vaccine trial”. they just testing the vaccine which means its not 100% safe. one last question, what did they give to the people in other countries before they conducted theirs? thanks Chris.

      Reply
      • I didn’t say they have no place for quarantine; I said not all vaccine testing needs quarantine. Anywhere they’ve done it, I have not heard of any quarantine. You are not sick or Ebola infested so why must you be quarantined? It’s a vaccine, it’s not the disease…LOL

James Atta Aglah can you explain what a vaccine is better to him please. I have seen you explain this brilliantly.

The researchers need to examine the participants, either regularly or at an interval so they need a way to reach out to them—mobile phones is the best. They can call in the morning and ask; are you feeling any headache or are you feeling any different? It’s to maintain contact. Almost everyone has a mobile phone in Europe so they won’t be giving that out.

Giving out of money? Everywhere there is such a research with volunteers, they give out some incentive—mostly some small money. In the UK, my friend did some flu drug testing last year and he got 300 pounds. Check the news papers in UK, they are always advertising for willing participants. In fact, there are people who have made this their full time jobs—we call them the human guinea pigs(unofficially). They just move from one testing center to another, making a lot of money…LOL

Two days ago I heard a commercial on radio for some drug testing while driving in London. Didn’t pay attention but I believe it was some pharmaceutical company and they were giving out money too.

If they don’t give out anything, why will anyone stop watching TV and come out to do it? Come on, even people doing work experience are giving some incentives like having their travel cost paid for them.

In Europe and everywhere, they will give them something but I don’t know how much. I will try and find an article which may mention this for you.

When I was doing my masters, I used to always get emails from my university about testing some new software and in return, they will give you £10 printing credit. They wanted students to just come to the computer room or library and use the computer and give out their feedback on new installed software.

Do you think a student chilling with his girlfriend will come and do this if there is no incentive? Even though the software is for the good for the student himself? Hell No!

  14. I usually agree with very little Chris writes but there is some sense is what he’s saying, though he may have gone about it in the wrong way by insulting Ghanaians.

We all enjoy the benefits of vaccines made possible by human testing in other countries. It happens in the Europe, Asia… everywhere. There is nothing wrong with the Ebola vaccine being tested in Ghana.

On the other hand if the nation objects, our views and wishes should be respected.

    Selfish ignorant bastards

  15. I may be ignorant on this, but isn’t a drug tested on people who already have the virus or the virus introduced to the body before the drug/vaccine to be tested effectively? Thus, the vaccines/drug serving as a cure for such ailments?

If YES, are the subjects ready to be infected before the vaccine is used on them? Isn’t that too much of a risk? Are they going to be quarantined during the entire process?

Further, who said countries like Liberia, sierra Leone etc., which already had that epidemic’s inhabitants would more or less be producing antibodies? That is lame! Would Mr. James Attah Aglah be willing to subject himself to such tests? Isn’t it prudent to go to such countries, test folks who have no such antibodies in their system and test the vaccines on them?

First of ghana is not under any obligation to allow the test of any kind of drugs on its citizens. If ur argument is anything to go by then why don’t you offer urself and ur entire family for this ebola vaccine trial? Before we start displaying our ignorance here, has anyone pause to ask if Ghana Food and Drugs Board has evaluated, tested (that is if they have the technological knowhow) the so called vaccines before agreeing to this vaccine trial in ghana? I bet a dollar to a doughnut the answer is NO. So Chris i admonish you to analyze a situation well b4 u start displaying your big ignorant head here.
