BNI To Investigate Leakage Of BECE Papers

The Bureau of National Investigation (BNI), is to carry out an investigation into the activities of WAEC that led to such widespread leakage of this year’s BECE.

The council announced yesterday that five papers in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination – the Paper 2 of Science, Maths, English Language, Social Studies, and Religious and Moral Education- had been cancelled because of widespread leakage of the papers.

The leak was so bad, that the papers were circulating on WhatsApp; can you believe that?

According to a report by Graphic Online, the BNI have taken over the investigations into the incident, as the feeling was that WAEC are incapable of investigating an issue of such magnitude.

The head of WAEC in Ghana, Rev Samuel Ollenu, was questioned by the Bureau in Accra on Wednesday. Government is said to be determined to get to the root of this and punish those found culpable.

A cancellation on this scale has never occurred before, telling us the magnitude of this current situation. It’s a pity that some hardworking students who are really just interested in passing their exams the right way has to suffer from this cancellation just as much as the guilty ones.

But insofar as this is not a new situation, someone at WAEC must really pay for this leakage. They set the questions, and they circulate them; so there is no question as to whose doorstep culpability should lie. I sincerely hope this investigation yields something fruitful and someone pays for this- and not just another smokescreen for pretending we’re doing something about a problem when we’re actually not.
