Texan Pastor Claims He Would Set Himself On Fire To Protest Gay Marriage | Oh Wait, He Was Just Kidding

Texan Pastor Claims He Would Set Himself On Fire

The US Supreme Court’s decision to legalise gay marriage nationwide has provoked such visceral reactions from the Christian right that makes you wonder if they’re really Christian.

For adherents of a religion whose founder rather famously asked them to love their enemies and do good to those that hate them, Christians aren’t being very Christ-like in reacting to this ruling. Of course, the bible also asks them to kill the gays in the Old Testament, and they aren’t doing that either. It’s all very confusing.

A pastor in Texas took things to a whole new level when he threatened that him and some of his pastor friends are ready ‘to burn’ to protest the ruling if need be. Sounding filled with bravado and very martyr-like, Rick Scarborough said, before Friday’s judgement…

“We’re simply being preemptive and saying, no matter what the cost, we are not going to bow, we are not going to bend, and we will burn”

“The preachers need to get out front, the leaders need to get out front, out front of these ordinary citizens and say, ‘Shoot me first’”

So after making these grandiose claims before the ruling, Scarborough has backtracked since the verdict was made. He now says he was only quoting a song, and that neither he nor anyone else has any plans to literally burn.

“I made that comment to paraphrase a spiritual song, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in which the three were given a choice—to bow to the image of Nebucahdnezzar or burn in a furnace,” said Scarborough.

”‘We will burn’ means that we will accept any sanction from the government for resisting [Friday’s] Supreme Court decision. We do not support any violence or physical harm.”

Hmm. Makes sense, although he probably did not expect the verdict to go against them when he made his bold proclamation. He also claimed it’s a satanic plot to destroy the church, and ultimately God.

“The end-game is the complete destruction of the church of the Lord Jesus, the replacement of it with this liberal theology that’s not a theology, it’s a philosophy, human-made, it goes back to the Garden of Eden when Satan wanted to be God. We now have a race of humans that don’t want to acknowledge that there’s a God.”

“They’re after God”

It’s about time someone went after him.
