This Boko Haram menace doesn’t seem to be seeing any improvement despite the change in government.
A female suicide bomber hit a church in North Eastern Nigeria, killing five including the pastor of the church. Many more are injured and are in critical condition, meaning the death toll could rise higher.
The bomber targeted the Redeemed Christian Church of God branch in Potiskum, Yobe State, and entered whilst a service was ongoing.
However, more disappointing than BET’s treatment of our supposed top artists is the implicit acceptance of the treatment, both from our artists and some of us back home. Whilst you would hardly expect a corporate entity like BET to be concerned about the (so far) minuscule complaints of a few Africans, the fact that some of us are willing to condone, or even quietly accept this treatment, is a far bigger problem than the discrimination itself.
Whilst people like GhanaCelebrities.Com editor Chris-Vincent and Fuse ODG have been fighting for recognition for our artists, the opposition hasn’t come from anywhere but within us. It smacks of being willing to put up with bullsh*t from authority, because you hope one day they would realise your everlasting meekness and decide to reward you.
Yet history has shown us that is a futile exercise, as there is no real change without affirmative action. Throughout history, all the big changes have come about because people realised the problems and took concrete steps to deal with them. So long as you are willing to ride with the status quo, it is not going to change.
As brilliant a piece as any I’ve seen on the subject is ‘Why Are So Many African Artistes Willing Participants In Their Own Degradation’, by a blogger known as Malaka. I‘ll be rehashing just a few of the points in her piece, which I think should be required reading for all Africans who are rationalising this dehumanising treatment from BET.
The first step to solving any problem is realising one exists in the first step. I find it incredible that people are still contending that the Best International Act (Africa) award is given off the main stage, before a crowd of less than 30 that possibly includes cleaners. Similarly, our artistes are forced to perform before such a disillusioning audience.
Congratulations are certainly in order for Karen Igho as she welcomes her first child with husband Yaroslav Rakos. The former Big Brother Africa winner gave birth to her son on Saturday, July 4 at the Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. Karen took to her Instagram account to share an adorable photo of … Read more
Where to go in Accra for a quick and no-fuss birthday treat? It was my partner’s birthday and being that he was travelling the next day, neither of us had time for a long, relaxing sit down meal. It was my treat and so I opted for the Spintex Road Yard Bird as it was conveniently located for both of us, and we’d been waiting for the right time to enjoy the place.
The decor is as you’d expect of an American-style diner – comfy padded seats, loud colour pops and stripes, yet with (in a nod to the “Yard Bird” name) the extra detail of contemporary diner booths with corrugated iron chicken shed roofs gave the feeling of actually being in a chicken coop.
This design has a very European sensibility and so I’d like to see Auntie Adjoa and Uncle Kwaku being seated in one of the booths, guaranteed laughs for an entire week! Despite the booths (which seat four) being a little on the small side, the interior is stylish, spacious and comfortable – I felt that I had a good rest from the hustle outside.
Alongside the decor, it is evident that much time and effort was put into creating Yard Bird’s menu to recognise local produce and tastes. This must be applauded; for example there are plaintain nachos and juices containing moringa. Daily Chef’s Specials help to broaden the choice of food and showcase the Chef’s repertoire.
Cocktails start at 20GHS and milkshakes are imaginatively split into two varieties – standard milkshakes (non-alcoholic) and “Moonshine” ones which hit you with alcoholic potency. We didn’t try these on this occasion as we both had meetings after lunch, but I’d very much like to try them when possible. For parents, you’ll be pleased to know that children are well catered for with a pared down “Baby Bird” menu and colouring-in pictures during their meal.
Let me ‘expose’ the dishonesty and lies in Jay Foley’s submission which blames Africans for not coming out to support the African artistes as the reason why Sarkodie, Stonebwoy and others ended up performing in front of just 27 people made up of management, BET technicians, lighting men, camera men and perhaps, cleaners.
How will Africans know that this performance/event is going to take place when BET did not effectively advertise it, with the plausible explanation being, because BET does not really give a hoot about these artistes so they couldn’t even be bothered…
I live in the UK and watch BET occasionally, I did not come across BET advertising this event on their BET UK ‘international’ channel.
Also, BET did not advertise this event on any of the African media platforms, blogs, websites, radio stations and TV stations that we know of—if anyone knows where they advertised this, let us know.
When we talk about ending this nonsense called faith, out of which religion grows—and out of which deluded people are able to parade themselves as spokesmen of a celestial non-existing God, people get angry. So let’s swallow this BS from this man of God with pride.
First of all, I think this pastor is right—and I believe God really spoke to him.
None of you can prove that God did not tell him this so you better believe him. Though Moses did not even exist, you believe God told him a lot of crap and even handed to him the 10 commandments, basic things that we already knew. So let’s grant this man of the same God some audience and credibility.
Speaking on Adom Fm yesterday, Prophet Emmanuel Gyamfi of Power House Chapel, based in Kumasi said that, in a vision, he saw “the hand of God appear from the skies to strongly knock Sarkodie to the ground” and that he was the one who assisted Sarkodie to get back on his feet.
God then later told Prophet Emmanuel why he knocked out Sarkodie, the Mayeather style; and the reason is, Sarkodie is using his talent and popularity to win souls for the devil, instead of God. So God is deeply upset.
Look, this is true—because, we know God for randomly getting upset and killing thousands of people in the Bible so He can actually do this to Sarkodie if he does not repent.
But as usual, there is room for redemption; God through the prophet has given Sarkodie 3 good weeks to repent or else, this will manifest—and God will go after Sarkodie’s head.
According to the pastor, God has sent down several misfortune to fall on Sarkodie’s head—so until he repents, he will face the wrath of God, father of Jesus Christ.
