USA Beats Japan To Win Third Women’s World Cup

The United States of America overwhelmed defending champions Japan to win the 2015 FIFA Women’s World cup with an emphatic 5-2 victory.

Tournament best player Carli Lloyd led the way, scoring a sensational hat trick to put the game beyond doubt. No other lady before had scored a hat trick in a world cup final.

The US had lost the final of the last world cup on penalties to Japan, and was determined not to suffer a repeat. Lloyd’s 16 minute hat trick ensured that was never a threat, despite a brave fight back from Japan to get two goals back.

Two more goals closed out the game, to give the USA her third world cup after previous triumphs in 1991 and 1999.

For a nation that is often so inept at men’s football, their women’s team is often up there amongst the best in the world. It’s the ultimate paradox.

They’re the first team to win three women’s world cups, whilst aside Lloyd goalkeeper Hope Solo was adjudged the best of the tournament.
