Ghana’s Interior Minister Thinks The Way To Stop Vigilante Groups Is To License Their Operations

I cannot believe the cluelessness with which our supposed leaders operate in this country. This guy is the interior minister, supposed to be in charge of the internal security of the nation, and this is the bullsh*t that he’s spewing.

Mark Woyongo, the Interior Minister, thinks vigilante groups like the Azorka Boys, who caused such mayhem during the Talensi by-elections, should be licensed as private security companies.

He thinks they’re operating illegally right now, so giving them license would make sure they operate legally. It’s something you can’t make up.

“There are some of them who are not licensed and they are operating. They are operating illegally. The law is that if you want to operate a security company in Ghana you must have a license. You must have a license to operate a security company and some of them do not have the license but they are operating.

“From now onwards we are going to ensure that those who operate have value or credible documents to operate as security agencies. These security companies will have to be licensed”

Why he thinks vigilante groups that go around causing mayhem are security companies beats the imagination. And even if they are, if the Interior minister is aware they are operating illegally- how come he’s not leading their arrests but rather calling for their legalisation? He wants to give them legal cover to commit more crimes?

Not content with that, he went ahead to exonerate the NDC backed Azorka boys of any wrongdoing. According to him, when they were going around shooting at people and wielding weapons- they were only defending themselves.

“Violence begets violence. Azoka boys will not act violent if they were not provoked. The other side also brought in some people…the Invincible Forces and then the Bolga Boys, so violence begets violence.

“What I mean is that if you are a peace lover and someone comes to attack you, definitely you have to protect yourself”

Right. A peace loving vigilante group; there’s a paradox if I ever heard one. And this guy is Interior minister. He’s an embarrassment, that’s what he is.
