The two Moroccan women who were arrested and put on trial for the ‘crime’ of wearing skirts have been acquitted and discharged.
The two women were arrested in the Moroccan town of Inezgane, after a market trader drew attention to what they were wearing and a crowd gathered around them.
But their lawyer has told the BBC that they’ve been acquitted, and the charges against them dropped. Houcine Bekkar Sbai says the next step for them is to prosecute the people who harassed them in the market where they were arrested.
It’s great news, that a Muslim state like Morocco can show enough awareness to acquit these women of those ridiculous charges. It is a sad fact, though, that in many other Muslim majority nations, a woman would not get away with the ‘crime’ of wearing a skirt.
