President Mahama’s Pick of John Dumelo As His Favourite, Yvonne Nelson’s Cry & My Honest Opinion

Ghanaian actress-Yvonne Nelson has been trending this morning—and as usual, it’s for the wrong reason. Fortunately for some us and unfortunately for her, everyone seems to be on her backside this time, saying, her comment was below the belt…

A few days ago, President John Dramani Mahama in an interview talked about Ghana’s showbiz and he mentioned Shirley Frimpong Manso, John Dumelo, Lil Win and several names as his favourites in their various spheres of entertaining career.

Subsequently, Yvonne Nelson in an interview stated that “John Dumelo supports him [President Mahama] publicly so I mean it is cool. I believe he has got his favourite, everyone has their favourite and if you are in the entertainment industry and you are putting Ghana on the map, the president should love you because you are doing something for Ghana. We are all putting Ghana on the map so I believe the President should love all of us because we are all trying for Ghana.”

She added, “For me, I want to see Ghana there and that’s a cool thing…the President should mention more names to encourage us.”

“He should mention names like Sarkodie, Jackie Appiah, Myself, Majid Michel, John Dumelo. These are people putting Ghana on the map. We need that kind of encouragement from our leaders,” the actress stressed.

Every reasonable person who understands ‘the concept of having a favourite’ would know that, we all have our favourites in life—even when it comes to every day things like food. Some people love Banku and others like “myself” have Waakye as our favourite—this does not in any way means that, Kenkey is inferior. It just means that, our favourite is our favourite and others are equally allowed to have their own favourites too.

The President of Ghana is not an alien who just dropped from Kepler-186f, he is a perfect human being with favourites—and irrespective of the elements which influence his choice of favourites, he has the right to have favourites like every other person. And this right extends to, being able to proudly mention his favourites when asked—especially during interviews.

Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson commented on the President’s mention of John Dumelo, saying, that amounts to an endorsement and that he should not have just mentioned John Dumelo’s name—since that is discriminatory.

Of course I am struggling to understand what Yvonne Nelson meant when she said, the President’s choice of John Dumelo as his favourite actor amounts to discrimination—also, I doubt if the President had mentioned her name as his favourite, she would have invoked “discrimination.”

A person’s pick of something as his or her favourite somewhat leads to bias—and even when it comes to bias, every person is biased and therefore we cannot on this argument find the President guilty of having committed any social, moral, “Industrial” or legal offence.

In an article I wrote a few months ago in relation to bias, I stated among other things that, “There should not be debate about bias in this world among human beings because we are all biased—and our bias spring out of a lot of things such as our experiences, our religion, our education, our morals, our relationships, our interest and our goals.

I wouldn’t have an issue with arguments about obvious and subtle bias—but there should not be arguments about the existence of bias at all, because it is everywhere and no where.”

John Dumelo has been vilified, crucified and atrociously punched for his openly support of President John Dramani Mahama and his NDC on several issues—and as such, I would have been deeply disappointed if the President did not mention John Dumelo as one of his favourites. Perhaps, his choice of John Dumelo sets forth the President’s bias, made possible by his political affiliation or his understanding of loyalty.

So what crime is Yvonne Nelson saying the President has committed? There is none—except that, she is being the usual spoiled brat, riding on whatever wave that takes off for undeserving attention.

John Dumelo has placed his head on the table to be chopped off several times for the President and you have a problem that the President names him as his favourite? At least, this shows that, the President is not ungrateful like most Ghanaians.

You stick up for him, he will have your name written in his favourite books.
