It’s this kind of gross hypocrisy, which somehow a lot of Christians are able to accommodate in their lives, that makes the religion and frankly religion in general so unattractive to outsiders.

Because not only do you get a group of people pretending to have superior morals, they use the same morals they aren’t following to condemn those on the outside. Atheists and religious people generally have the same morals but most people regard atheists as the worst scum on earth.

If you don’t know Josh Duggar, he’s the eldest son of the ultra conservative US Christian family ‘The Duggars’. Until recently they were the stars of a TLC reality show ’19 kids and counting’, which followed their lives and how they applied their Christian principles.

Yeah, 19 kids, because they do not believe in contraception and if God doesn’t want them to have kids he wouldn’t send them.

The show got cancelled recently because it turned out Josh Duggar had s*xually molested some of his sisters when they were young. It also turned out his holier than thou parents had discovered the abuse but had covered it up.

So not content with ruining his family, Duggar is taking a shot at ruining his marriage too. The recent hack of the website for cheating spouses Ashley Madison revealed that Josh had two accounts. He has since come out to apologise and admit that he cheated on his wife.

So we have this evangelical Christian family who spent their time going around campaigning against gays, against contraception and abortion and everything they had decided was a sin. Until the molestation scandal Josh was actually being paid to do that, as a member of the Family Research Council, a position he has since resigned from.

And their first child, at the forefront of their crusades, is such a mess. See, everybody makes mistakes; but when you go around condemning others and generally pretending your religion makes you better than them you aren’t allowed any mistakes. It’s that whole glass house and stones thing.

And I should be quick to point out this hypocrisy is not restricted to the Duggars alone. If you take the issue of gay rights, Africans would be the first to shout against it because the bible or Quran condemns it. Yet we have these same people lying and committing adultery and fornication and generally treating their holy text as irrelevant until they have to condemn someone they do not like.

It’s that kind of morally bankrupt behaviour that Josh Duggar symbolises. After all, he just needs to invoke the name Jesus and everyone would move on from his sins. When you have a blank slate from Jesus every time you sin there is no incentive to stay sin free.

“I have been the biggest hypocrite ever. While espousing faith and family values, I have secretly over the last several years been viewing pornography on the internet and this became a secret addiction and I became unfaithful to my wife,” Duggar said in a statement Thursday.
