As usual being the reactionary society that we are the Judicial Council have moved swiftly to show some spine, despite making little moves to weed out the rot in the first place.

The Council has suspended twenty two of the thirty four judges implicated in the corruption scandal that has turned Ghana on its head. The decision was contained in a statement released Wednesday.

“A Disciplinary Committee of the Judicial Council was constituted to investigate the petition against the 22 judges and magistrates. It is a five-member Committee chaired by a justice of the Supreme Court.

“On September 7, 2015 the circuit judges and magistrates were served with letters stating the allegations against them and asked to submit their responses by September 9, 2015.

“The Judicial Council further decided that upon receipt of the responses, the 22 judges and magistrates have accordingly been suspended with effect from Thursday September 10, 2015,” the statement said.

Those not suspended yet are the judges at the High court level, who are now being investigated to determine the case to be brought against them.

Since the scandal broke judges have been scrambling up and down. Some fell sick, with one said to have collapsed upon hearing the news whilst another developed stroke. Some handed in their resignations but were rebuffed; one Justice John Ajet-Nassam returned his official vehicle.

Justice Ajet-Nassam is the judge who sat on the Alfred Woyome judgement debt case. Others implicated are Human Rights Court judge Kofi Essel Mensah and High Court Judge Charles Quist.
