Burkina Faso Coup Leaders Refuse To Step Down As The Army Advances On Ouagadougou

Burkina-Faso

Coup leaders in Burkina Faso have refused to step down despite the army giving them an ultimatum of today, September 22.

General Gilbert Dendiere seized power last week, deposing the president and the prime minister. The coup was carried out by soldiers loyal to ex-President Blaise Compaore with the help of the Presidential Guard.

Most of the army however remain loyal to the ousted government, and they advanced on Ouagadougou, calling for the new regime to step down.

At least 10 people have been killed and more than 100 injured since the coup in clashes between the presidential guard and protesters.

With their refusal to hand over power, there are fears fighting would erupt between the two factions soon.

General Dendiere has handed over the deposed leaders, but would hand over power only after a deal being brokered by ECOWAS which would hand all the mutinous soldiers full pardons.
