Sports Journalist Carl Tuffour Says Fifa And GFA Presidents Should Have Term Limits

The upheaval at Fifa continues unabated, after Sepp Blatter and two other top officials were suspended; and Alhaji Issa Hayatou was appointed caretaker boss.

Sepp Blatter has been boss of Fifa since 1998, Hayatou at CAF since 1988. The GFA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi has headed Ghana Football since 2005, and recently won elections for a further four years. All three men routinely face allegations of corruption.

And if you ran an organisation long enough, I guess you can build whatever cabal you want around you to do your bidding. So if you want to clean up football, maybe term limits should be fixed for its leaders, like it happens for presidents in all democracies.

A position put up by celebrated sports journalists Carl Tuffuor, when he spoke with Nana Kwao Ansah IV on PM Express on Joy News channel.

“It’s got to the point where we need FIFA to start having [fixed tenure for its presidents] and by that implication, the same should apply to the [Ghana] FA”

“The idea of FIFA having two terms is gaining a lot of currency and maybe by that it should also reflect in Ghana” Tuffuor emphasised.

We whole-heartedly agree. Unfettered power in any sort of environment breeds corruption.
