Ghana Given Until February To Settle Outstanding Debt Or Face Disconnection Of Gas Supply

Last week precedent was set when the CEO of a multi-national corporation, the West African Gas Pipeline company (Wapco); held a press conference to complain about the Volta River Authority’s indebtedness and to give an ultimatum for the cessation of gas supply to Ghana.

The authority has accrued a over $100m debt that was deemed unacceptable to the company. After the press conference, government, reactionary as ever; quickly scrambled a team to deal with the embarrassing scenario.

Whilst Ghana was spared blackout on Friday, after the payment of $10m; the deadline has now been extended to February 2016. N-gas, who supplies the commodity through Wapco, has given government till the second month of next year to make the payment.

Mr Kweku Sersah Johnson, Head of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Power; made this known on Peace Fm today (Monday).

According to him, the rest of the payments would be made in three tranches before the deadline expires.

We hope February would not arrive with another gloomy situation hanging over Ghana’s head.
