British Airways flight crash lands in South Africa

A British Airways flight was forced to crash land in South Africa after a part of its landing gear collapsed during the attempt to land the plane.

The pilot managed to safely land the plane despite the malfunction, with all 94 passengers and six crew members evacuated safely from the crash site at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

The ComAir Flight BA6234, which flies under British Airways colours, left Port Elizabeth earlier this morning for Johannesburg, and experienced the landing gear collapse during the approach to land at OR Tambo.

This forced the pilot to crash land the Boeing 737, with the left side of the jet scraping the runway as it screeched to a halt.

“Passenger Warren Mann recounted how the pilot informed those on board shortly before landing that the ‘left landing gear had broken off’”. MailOnline reports.

“He added: ‘This caused the plane to hit the runway at an angle. We could see sparks as the left wing and the engines were scraped across the runway. The wing seemed completely broken off.”

An investigation has been launched into the incident by ComAir.
