Veteran Ghanaian hi-life musician, Obuoba J.A Adofo- has expressed worry at how most DJs and radio presenters demand for money before they think of playing his songs.

The legendary musician, who has carved a niche for himself in the Ghanaian music industry- said that despite his age, he still releases an album yearly.

However, his inability to pay ‘payola’ to DJs and presenters to promote his songs serves as a huge setback to popularising his songs.

According to him, most of them will trash the song if you do not get them some cash—which is termed as motivation fee or ‘payola’.

“Every year I release an album but people don’t hear of it because presenters don’t play because I don’t have money to pay them, so I normally sell them at my shows”, he told Mike ‘2’ on the Adom Entertainment Hall show last Saturday.

Obuoba, who has about 115 albums to his credit and has been in the music industry for over 40 years, disclosed that his only source of funds now is what he earns from performing at funerals.

The musician also revealed that music is not the only gift that God gave him—but he has been gifted with the ability to stop rains from disturbing him during his performances at his shows.

“Rain has not destroyed my show before because God has given me gift of power – so whenever there is a sign (that it is about to rain) I just pray to God to delay the rains so I can finish my show”, he said.

When asked if his powers to stop rain is a charm, he answered it is God who answers his prayers when he called on his name—and it’s not a charm.

It’s sad to know that DJs and presenters still request for ‘payola’ but I’m wondering if this generation who are in love with Azonto and al qaeda songs will listen to his songs….

Well that’s just an opinion but when was the last time you listened to ‘Ankwanobi’ or ‘Yaa Boatemaa’ by Obuoba J.A Adofo?
