Black Stars Shrug Off Comoros Islands With Comfortable 2-0 Win In World Cup Qualifier

The Black Stars did not break sweat against the Islanders, grabbing a comfortable 2-0 lead despite a couple of second half scares.

Ghana laboured to a goalless draw in the first leg, and needed a commanding performance to not only win, but lay down a marker for the main qualifiers. And whilst that did not happen, it was a win earned at walking pace and showed the promise this team always has.

After stubbornly holding on for all of 17 minutes, a sublime goal from the Stars showed the gulf between the teams. Mubarak Wakaso curled in a beautiful free kick to give the Stars the lead, racing down the touchline to celebrate with his teammates on the bench.

The Stars remained the dominant team, but could not break down an admittedly well organised Comoros side. Occasionally, they also made forays forward that seemed scary- especially as just one goal would have catapulted them into the lead on the away goals rule

In the end, the upset was not to be; as Jordan Ayew rifled home a few minutes from time on the rain soaked pitch to put the Stars two goals clear and on the way to the group stages. It was not the most dominant game, but it always seemed like we were playing at third gear and thus could shift into ‘beast’ mode as needed.

Ghana thus qualifies for the group stages, where we await our opponents as we attempt to make it four world cups in a row.
