Power Minister Says He Pledged To End Load Shedding And Not Dumsor: You Would Not Get Accountability If You Do Not Demand It

I remember recently gushing over the fact that a spontaneous eruption of protests over a nightclub fire that claimed 32 lives in Romania led to the downfall of that country’s government.

I remember noting at the time that people are inherently selfish, and very few people would bother to do the right thing if checks and balances are not in place. In the case where the institutions do not work, like in Ghana- it behoves on the people to get that change rolling by putting pressure on the leaders.

But Ghanaians are the most passive, laissez faire population ever found on the surface of this earth, so the politician does not even fear telling bald faced lies anymore because nobody would call them out on it.

Not to devalue their tragedy, but 32 people died in Romania, and that sparked the protests that took down the government. Almost 200 died here in the June 3 flood/fire and not one person protested, and nobody was even in danger of losing their jobs. In this environment, nothing would ever get done, as accountability is non-existent.

So I hope nobody is surprised that our esteemed power Minister, Dr Kwabena Donkor, is thinking of staying on beyond December 31 despite quite clearly failing to fulfil his promise of resigning if he fails to end the power crisis by December 31. Virtues like responsibility and honour are alien to the Ghanaian culture, so we shouldn’t really be shocked.

Speaking in the Central Region, the Minister when asked about his famous deadline, and whether he could meet it, said “Well let’s wait and see.”

So if he did not end the dumsor by December 31, would he go through with his promise?

“Load shedding is not ‘dumsor,’ they are two different things” he sharply replied the journalist questioning him.

Already you can see where he is going eh? With the distinction between the two, which frankly I could care less about, this guy wants to renege on his promise on a technicality. But nobody really expected him to fix the dumsor, and nobody really expected him to go through with his promise. Most importantly, nobody really cared because even if he did, another incompetent buffoon would be brought to fill his shoes and the cycle continues.

This is Ghana, nobody cares about anything anyway- and that’s the problem.
