Recently, it came to light that Ghana held the ‘enviable’ record of being the second best in the world when it comes to open defecation. It’s an honour nobody wants, but which we have nevertheless earned for the abysmal way we run things in this country.

For this so-called city named Accra, where people can build anywhere they want, and apparently sh*t everywhere they want as well, things are so haphazard you wonder why its known as the capital. There is a law that every household must have a toilet facility, but nobody enforces it, and nobody cares.

And that lack of facilities is one of the biggest problems plaguing us, and that contributes to outbreak of diseases every year. Speaking in Accra on Tuesday, President Mahama said government has secured a $100m facility to kick off the project of providing toilets for households in Accra.

The President met with traditional authorities in Accra to brief them on what government is doing to improve the lot of their peoples.

The President has shifted into campaign mood, so take this with a pinch of salt. We wait to see some concrete results before.

Besides, $100m? So how much of it would really really go into the project?
