Ghana’s Energy Commission to Clam Down on Unlicensed Solar Service Providers

The irony is clear; the Energy Commission cannot ensure that Ghanaians have electricity—the large reason why most Ghanaians are considering solar, but it has the resource to clamp down illegal solar service provider.

According to StarrFm, the Energy Commission is going after Solar Service Providers who do not have the required licenses for their businesses—ready to shut down their businesses.

Reasonably and considering the current power crisis in Ghana, the Energy Commission should rather be talking about regularizing the activities of these unlicensed Solar Service Providers—because when people are desperate, which Ghanaians are, they will do whatever seems comforting.

Inspector of Electricity and Renewal Energy at the Energy Commission Peter Ahmed Amanquandoh told Starr News such solar service providers will be prosecuted.

“By the renewable energy law, it is an offense to carry out any commercial activity in the industry without a license from the energy commission. Some people know it but just like any other law, we flout it with impunity.”

He added; “We, (energy commission) through our regulatory powers are moving round the capital cities to make sure that any solar service provider without license from the energy commission is made to dance to the full rigors of the law.”

Of course such activities must be regulated but clamping them down when Ghanaians are desperate for power is not the solution—as long as the demand exists, the supply will always show its head.
