Ghanaian Education Official Says Assessing Students Entirely Through Examinations Is ‘Tyrannical’

This is one of the huge flaws in education that is worth examining. Some other countries have recognised it, and place just as much premium on extracurricular activities, practical assignments, and several other means of testing students that are meant to complement being examined.

But in Ghana, we place too much premium on examinations, and very little value on anything else. It breeds ignorant graduates, who crammed as much temporary info into their minds as they could to pass exams- but have very real or practical knowledge of whatever course it is they are studying.

The Executive Secretary of the National Inspectorate Board Dr. George Afeti, has called out this glaring flaw in our education. According to him, examinations are tyrannical, and ultimately does not produce the sort of graduates that we need.

He was speaking at the 20th Matriculation ceremony of the Koforidua Polytechnic.

“In Ghana today, progression within the education system from one level to the next is determined almost exclusively by the performance of the learner at one examination or the other, this type of examination driven selection process is what I call the tyranny of examination,” he said.

“The enormous power of examination in the allocation of limited places at the Universities and Polytechnics is evident in the pressure on students, teachers and schools to meet the highest performance targets. The tendency is for students and teachers to devote less time to the development of problem-solving and critical thinking skills, ability to work in teams, and creative activities which are time consuming but may not be examinable.”

He could not be more right.
