Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the latest instalment in the Star Wars franchise, the first time fans has seen their favourite characters on the big screen since 2005’s The Revenge of the Sith.

Upon all the huge anticipation for the movie, this feat is no surprise. The movie grossed $57m on opening night in the US and Canada, beating the previous opening night record haul of $43.5m, set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II in 2011.

Aside North America, the movie also broke the same record in the UK and Ireland, beating the same Harry Potter movie, grossing £9.64m to the previous record of £9.48m.

The cult status of the franchise, and the fanaticism of its fans means several industry analysts predict The Force Awakens could become the highest grossing movie of all time.
