Rwandans went to the polls on Friday to vote in a referendum seeking to change the country’s constitution to allow President Paul Kagame to go for further terms in office.

Paul Kagame has ruled Rwanda since the year 2000, having last won elections in 2010. Hugely popular in the country for leading reforms and rebuilding the country after the Rwandan genocide, the referendum was organised to lift a constitutional ban on any president serving past two terms.

Provisional results from the electoral commission show 98.1% of the populace voted to lift the ban. The results mean Mr Kagame can run for a further term when his current one expires in 2017. He could remain in power until 2034, although he has said he would wait until the approach of the next elections to decide whether to run again.

“We have seen the will of the people. It’s clear that what the people want, they can achieve,” National Electoral Commission chief Kalisa Mbanda said.

The opposition has opposed the polls, saying very little time was given for debate on the matter.
