It has emerged that over 4,000 Ghanaians risked their lives between January and December, 2015 to travel by boat to Italy—in search for a better life.
This year, we’ve seen a lot of deaths on the Mediterranean sea of illegal immigrants attempting to cross the sea into Europe, because African leaders continue to push the continent deep into poverty.
In a rank of such illegal travels to Italy, Ghana has been raked 10th in the world and 5th in Africa.
The Chief of Mission of the International Organisation of Migration (IOM) in Ghana, Ms Sylvia Lopez Ekra, made this known at a meeting to commemorate the International Migrants Day in Accra.
According to Graphic; “The meeting, organised by the IOM under the Ghana Integrated Migration Management Approach Programme (GIMMA), brought together civil society organisations and other stakeholders to discuss issues of migrations.
The GIMMA project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the IOM and the Ghana Immigration Service, is aimed at contributing to the government’s efforts to manage migration more effectively.”
As a result of poor living conditions in Africa, most Africans are on the look out for whatever means to travel out of the continent, mostly to European countries they have no clue about.
These 4,000 and over Ghanaians are those recorded to have made it to Italy, several others did not make it—and are not counted for.
