There is very little we manufacture here ourselves, including things like matches and toothpicks. If there’s anything we are really good at, it is probably at importing stuff.

Every government that comes into office makes huge noises about supporting made in Ghana goods, but then when they need chairs, for example, they turn to China. It’s an old failing that we do not trust our own stuff.

Apostle Kwadwo Safo, more commonly known as Safo Kantanka, has been trying to change that in his own way; and his recent release of a range of locally produced cars has raised the question of made in Ghana goods to the forefront of the discussion again.

Speaking at an exhibition of the vehicles, vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah Arthur said that government would provide whatever support they can to keep the company producing such goods to lift the image of the country.

“I am here to reiterate and emphasise that the support [announced by the Environment Minister] will be provided so that we will be able to develop to a much higher level the work that you have started here.

“You will see by our actions that we support the work that you are doing,” he affirmed.

Recently, NPP flagbearer Nana Akuffo-Addo also pledged his support to the company– during a visit to their assembly plant.
