As authorities in Dubai get ready to light the sky up with firework’s on New Year’s Eve, a large skyscraper unexpectedly caught fire.

20 storeys of the Address Downtown hotel in Central Dubai caught fire a short while ago, with debris raining down the side of the skyscraper. Fire officials arrived on the scene and quickly got the blaze back under control.

The hotel lies very close to the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper, which would be the scene for the end of year fireworks. The planned fireworks are a spectacular display that would start at the Khalifa and move to other venues, and the near disaster is not dampening anyone’s enthusiasm.

“There are no injuries, thank God … of course, it will not affect the celebration,” Reuters quotes Maorj General Rashed al-Matrushi, general director of the Dubai Civil Defence, as saying.

Nothing stops a celebration in Dubai.
