China Ends Its Controversial Family Planning Policy | ‘One Child Per Couple’

China Ends One-Child Policy

A section of the Chinese population are jubilating after state authorities announced that the controversial one child policy is being phased out with effect from January 1, 2016.
The one child policy which was introduced between 1978 and 1980 allowed couples to have just one child.
The policy was implemented as a measure to reduce then-surging population—and also limit pressure on other amenities in the country.
Couples in the country are henceforth allowed to have up to two children, according to BBC.
However, families in the country are obliged to contact authorities on the issuance of birth permits, or “face the sanction of a forced abortion.”
“Couples breaking the law have been penalised by losing state benefits, being fined or even sterilised but the country’s ageing population, coupled with one of the lowest birth rates in the world, have prompted the change in policy,” a BBC correspondent reported.
