IGP Reveals Plans Are Far Advanced For Installation Of Cameras At Intersections To Help Deal With Motor Riders Who Flout Traffic Laws

I have many problems with how the Ghana Police carry out their functions, both in general and on our roads; but if there’s one concerning their trafficking that is most annoying- I would probably go with allowing motor riders to abuse our road laws with impunity.
There isn’t a single motor rider who obeys the traffic lights (none that I’ve seen anyway). And that has personally led me to a near accident once and many others I’ve seen and heard off.
Yet somehow the police have never done anything about it. I always tell the anecdote of my near-miss- when a motor rider flouting traffic laws nearly knocked me down as an innocent pedestrian- simply crossing the road because I foolishly thought that the lights turning red for cars meant it was safe for me. It happened right in front of police headquarters in Accra, and I witnessed same on many other days for the four years I trooped to that place nearly every morning to get to lectures.
So if this proposed new measure by Police is really going to happen, and would be studiously implemented and enforced- and not left to rot after two months- it would make our roads much safer in a very appreciable way.
The Inspector General of Police, John Kudalor, has revealed that the force is working on soon implementing a plan to install cameras at traffic intersections meant for keeping an eye on motor riders who refuse to obey traffic laws.
Kudalor revealed the news on Joy Fm’s Super Morning Show on Thursday. According to him, the problem was with the inability of the police to abandon traffic to chase just one offender, so the technology would enable them to trace the people who flout the laws and track them down.
Like anything in Ghana, it all comes down to implementation, doesn’t it? The devil is always in the details.
