Every actor and their mom are wading into this new ‘controversy’ surrounding the lack of diversity in this year’s nominations for the Academy awards.
Oscar winning actress Lupita Nyong’o added her voice to the controversy with a post on her Instagram page. Awarded for her performance in 2014 in ’12 Years A Slave’, Nyong’o reiterated the complaint about the all white composition of the 2015 class.
“I am disappointed by the lack of inclusion in this year’s Academy Awards nominations. It has me thinking about unconscious prejudice and what merits prestige in our culture” she wrote.
Nyong’o captioned her post with the poignant James Baldwin quote: “Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced”
The release of nominees for this year’s Oscar’s has sparked fierce debate on the lack of inclusion for actors of colour. Notable names like Jada Pinkett has called for a boycott, whilst in the UK Idris Elba gave a nearly identical speech adressing lack of diversity to the British Parliament.
