Rita Ora recently sued Jay Z and his label, Roc Nation, to be released from her contract to the company- but it seems like the rap mogul is not going down without a fight.
Roc Nation has filed a counter suit in California superior court, suing the singer for $2.3m. The company claims the singer failed to honour parts of her contractual obligations.
According to Billboard, Roc Nation in the suit “says it has ‘tirelessly promoted’ Ora’s career, spending over $2.3 million promoting and recording her 2012 album Ora. The filing calls for that $2.3 million to be returned, and for damages on the four remaining records in her contract.”
This runs counter to the claims the artist made in her own suit, when she claimed that her interests are not being served by being on the label anymore, as the company has moved into several other ventures, leaving her feeling marginalised.
“As Roc Nation’s interests diversified, there were fewer resources available and the company suffered a revolving door of executives.” the lawsuit claimed.
“Rita’s remaining supporters at the label left or moved on to other activities, to the point where she no longer had a relationship with anyone at the company.”
However, Ora’s lawyer Howard King tells Billboard that the counter suit is just a formality, as they are in the process of getting Rita released from her contract.
“We’re in the process of finalizing those details,” King.said “[Jay Z] could not have been more gracious.”
