Recently the surgical wards of the Korle-Bu teaching hospital were closed down, ostensibly for renovation works to be carried out on the facility.
What this has caused is an exacerbation of a situation where people needing instant, life saving care, have to wait months to be scheduled to undergo surgery. It has already led to several documented deaths.
A specialist at the hospital, Dr Hadi Mohammed Abdallah, has bemoaned the state of affairs at the hospital. He told Joy News that the problem runs deeper than the closure of some facilities, as in several others there is a lack of much needed equipment to save the lives of patients.
“What reason at all can we give for closing the ICU for two years?” he queried.
“I feel sad as a Ghanaian that we can allow this to go on for two years. I mean this just has to do with logistics,”
According to Dr Abdallah, there is no reason why we should be able to fly $3m to the Black Stars in Brazil, but then take no action when people’s lives are actually at stake.
“If you need to also get a special jet to go and bring these equipment…we should do it. For a country to put more worth on 23 footballers because of so-called passion of a nation against the health of a whole nation, it is wrong,” he lamented.
And he’s right. It’s not that the Black Stars should not be paid what is owed them, but priorities are priorities. Are we saying people dying deserve less attention than the already overpaid, ego inflated prima donnas the Stars is filled with?
“The patient has nowhere to go. They have nowhere to go. Nowhere and it is sad.
“The family [of such patients who die] will never forgive you and that is what is currently leading to the abuse of doctors.” he added.
