The former United Nations secretary general, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the first African to head the world body, has died at the age of 93.
Boutros-Ghali died in Cairo on Tuesday, February 16, after being admitted into hospital with a broken pelvis, the BBC reports.
The Venezuelan ambassador to the UN and current president of the UN Security Council, Rafael Dario Ramirez Carreno, confirmed the news.
Boutros headed the UN for one five year term from 1992, but failed to be renamed to the post in 1996 after a conflict with the United States. Kofi Annan stepped into the role after Boutros-Ghali served his term.
He is to date the only UN head to serve just one term, and at the time became the first African, and the first Arab, to head the UN.
