For God knows how long, the Miss Universe Ghana ‘scam’ has been a success to the organisers—they always manage to get young desperate girls to enter their competition yearly and hardly honour the promised prizes.
A certain Gifty Ofori was crowned Miss Universe Ghana 2012, and the organisers promised her “a list of prizes including an official car service for her year of reign, an all expense paid trip to the 61st Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada, a three-month internship at the United Nations in New York, and a presentation and modelling portfolio shot by celebrity photographer Fadil Berisha in New York.”
That wasn’t all, she was also promised a “Samsung Note 3 phone tablet, four pages editorial spread in an international magazine, personal celebrity stylists in New York, Los Angeles and Accra and also management and representation by the Insignia Experience/RAC Group as well as a year of incredible experience of celebrity status and adventure. Per her contract, she was also be given a house to live in for her year of reign.”
In May 2013 while a new Miss Universe Ghana (for 2013) was about to be crowned, the previous winner-Gifty Ofori had not received literally any of the major prizes she was promised. She spoke to NewsOne at the time and said “I have only received Samsung Galaxy, my trip to represent Ghana at 61st edition Miss Universe in the US and the photo shoot I did. I have not received the vital packages.”
After speaking to the media in relation to the fact that the organisers of Miss Universe Ghana had failed to give her the promised prizes even as at May 2013, Gifty Ofori was STRIPPED off her title as Miss Universe Ghana 2012—with the organisers claiming that, she breached a term in her contract which prohibited her from discussing certain things with the media.Miss Universe
This is one of the many cases and familiar way the organisers of Miss Universe Ghana-Insignia Experience & Roberta Annan Consulting have handled the ultimate winners.
But Gifty Ofori did not give them an easy ride as the others did—she took them to court.
And following hearings, an Accra High Court has ordered the organisers to reinstate Gifty Ofori as Miss Universe Ghana 2012 and pay her an amount of GH₵130, 0000.
The court which was presided over by Anthony Oppong J, ruled that Gifty Ofori should be paid the rest of her prize package, an equivalent of GH₵130, 000—and also ordered for her legal fees of GH₵10, 000 to paid by the defendant.
