One of the survivors of the horrific crash that occurred in Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo region has opened up on what led to the accident that has killed 61 people so far, with 25 wounded, some in critical condition.
Identified as Sumeila, the crash survivor, who has lost both legs- told Joy News that the accident occurred because the driver was speeding way above any reasonable limit, because he wanted to make another run that same day.
“The driver said he wanted to hurry up to the station to pick passengers for the return journey”, Sumeila said.
“He was really speeding. I have never seen a bus ran so fast”.
He also added that the driver ignored numerous pleas from passengers to slow down, with the accident occurring whilst he tried to overtake another vehicle, and ran headlong into the incoming KIA truck loaded with tomatoes.
His account has been confirmed by the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Command, contradicting earlier reports that the crash was due to a faulty brake.
“Our initial investigations have revealed that the accident was caused by over speeding driving and it was from the Metro Mass Bus. It was overtaking the vehicle where they met in the same lane and then they had the head-on collision.” Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Christopher Tawiah told Citi Fm.
“The latest and the final report is that 61 dead and then 25 are in critical condition.” He added.
Media reports have also indicated that emergency services arrived at the scene four hours after the accident, making it all the more miraculous that some survived. Officials have blamed logistical challenges, with the Ambulance service noting there is only one ambulance in Kintampo.
The MMT bus was also almost certainly overloaded, as the dead plus injured totals 86, when at most, with the two vehicles involved, the toll should be around 75.
