The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin, has extended Her Majesty’s gratitude to the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) for their help in capturing a British drug kingpin who fled to Ghana.
Jon Benjamin expressed his gratitude to the state body on twitter, after a joint operation between the BNI and the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), led to the capture of David McDermott.
McDermott, 42, was arrested around Burma Hills in Accra, and is set to be processed for court and extradited sometime next week.
The fugitive is one of several individuals suspected to be connected to a 2013 drug seizure by British authorities, members of a Liverpool based gang attempting to smuggle cocaine and distribute within Britain. The drugs were seized at Tilbury docks nearly three years ago, hidden in a container of frozen Argentinean beef.
McDermott has since been wanted in connection with that drug bust, and also for another charge of conspiracy to commit blackmail.
In recent times, Ghanaian and British law enforcement cooperation has been at a high, with another recent operation leading to the capture of Arthur Simpson Kent, who was wanted back in the UK for murder, and fled to Ghana.
