In recent days, Ghanaians are increasingly being given reason to worry about potential terrorist threats, after terrorists hit a beach resort in neighbouring Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday.
In the aftermath, national security announced that Ghana is at increased risk of an attack, and said that measures are being taken to correspond with the increased threat alert.
However, a new directive issued by the US Military to personell in West Africa indicates Ghana might be more at risk than we’re being let on. Reuters reports military personnel have been told to restrict trips to five West African nations, including Ghana, due to threat of terrorist attacks. The five include Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina, who have been hit with high profile attacks within the past few month; and Guinea and Senegal.
The order is effective till June 30, and only covers unofficial travel.
“Given the recent attacks in western Africa, we felt it prudent to make this decision at this time in an effort to ensure the safety of our personnel,” U.S. Lieutenant Colonel Michelle Baldanza, a Pentagon spokeswoman, said.
