At a point everyone must see the absurdity embedded in this religion thing, surely?
We hear of such stories all the time, a ‘man of God’ using that authority to order his congregation to do crazy things, like eat hair or drink gasoline or something equally dumb.
And people wholeheartedly do it.
The below video, posted by Gossip Mill Nigeria, shows South African pastor Penuel Mnguni of End Times Disciples Ministries Church, ordering some of his church members to crawl on all fours and follow him like sheep. And boy, do they oblige.
Mnguni is the same pastor who ordered some of his congregants to eat live snakes last year during another service.
Watching this video, how can anyone escape the conclusion that in some instances, religion works exactly like a mental disorder. It makes sane people do insane things.
Often when cases like these occur, more moderate religious people like to say that this is not what religion is supposed to be about, and that these people have extreme beliefs that do not represent the religion. But the whole point of religions are that they take extreme beliefs, like virgins giving birth and people living in whales, and turn them into normal beliefs. So if you start from that premise, no belief is too extreme for a religion, when it can make you believe anything.
‘Speaking in tongues’ is not normal, but religion has made it normal. Catholics believe they are literally eating and drinking the body and blood of a resurrected Jewish carpenter every time they take the Eucharist. If you give Christianity 200 years, I’m pretty sure it can make people crawling after their pastors like sheep into a normal belief, if it so chooses.
