A drinking bar operator in Accra has been sentenced to eleven years in prison after being found guilty of unlawful possession of narcotic drugs.
Ama Forson was arrested on suspicion of selling drinks to the patrons of her drinking bar laced with Indian hemp. She pleaded not guilty in court, but the trial judge found her guilty after perusing the evidence presented in the case.
Prosecutors said the woman, a mother of nine, was arrested at Bortianor in Accra during a police raid. At the time of her arrest, police retrieved portions of the drug from her handbag, as well as in a wine bottle found on the premises.
She was processed for court and charged with unlawful possession of narcotics. She denied the charge, claiming she had no knowledge of the drugs.
After she was sentenced- with hard labour- she reportedly dissolved into tears right in the courtroom. As mentioned earlier, she has nine children.
